Hi,

with MSWin2k3 SP1 ENG and all updates installed except KB896688. During
Preparing download Microsoft Update gives 0x80242008 error code. I do not
find any info on MS web site.

Additionally, i've tried to install it using standalone (MS Downloads)
package, but error returned (log included). I have never got IE7 Beta on this
system.

1.032: c:\06dcef1fbf2f33a9684e702fa40c34\update\update.ex e (version 6.1.22.4)
1.042: Hotfix started with following command line: /log:\xx.log
1.132: Unexpected Error While Executing Line 1 (
Test.IE7InstallBlock.Section ) of PreRequisite
1.152: KB896688 Setup canceled.
2.744: Message displayed to the user: KB896688 Setup canceled.
2.744: User Input: OK
2.744: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf00d
2.744: Update.exe return code was masked to 0x643 for MSI custom action
compliance.

What's wrong, how to solve it?

Thanks,

Martin

I have the exact same issue on 2 different XP SP2 machines. All updates are
on except KB986688. Downloading the fix and running it with the /log
parameter produced the exact same results as Martin has below.
On one of the computers, I can no longer get on the campus network because
they have blocked computers without the latest patches.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Dan

Do you have by any chance "moved" the program files folder onto
another partition than Windows is installed into?

Bye,
Freudi

Yes, as a matter of fact, both computers I am having a problem with (as are
most of the computers I use) have the program files folder moved to the D:
drive. Windows is installed on the C: drive.
Do you have any idea how to get around this so we can get this update
installed?
Thanks, Dan

Freudi,
Thank you very much for this tip. Sure enough, the KB896688 update will
not install when Program Files is not on the C: drive. I use TweakUI on most
of my computers to move Program Files to the D: drive.
So, I used TweakUI to set Program Files back to C: and the update
installed. Unfortunately, when I moved it back to D:, WU reported the update
as not installed. I have had to set it back to C: and go through my start
menu and change many of the icons to point back to D:. Wouldn't you know it,
all of the applications out there follow the MS reg keys to install and run
properly on other than C:, but what breaks? IE
Again, thanks for the tip, I am up and running. Let's see if MS will
fix or reissue the patch to verify properly no matter where Program Files is
located.
Thanks, Dan

The critical update DOES try to patch your D:\Program Files\internet
explorer, but when Windows gets installed, it puts iexplore.exe in C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer. So, the internet explorer folder on D is really
just a phantom folder with a few random files. Since the patch can't find IE
in D, it returns that Test.Installblock error.

When you run IE, it WILL run it off the C drive, yet, the patch will only
report itself as installed if it was applied in the D drive (if you changed
your Program Files directory after patching). I suggest you copy all the
files in the C:\Program Files\ directory over the F:\Program Files directory.
This should make the patch report itself properly.

I gave that a try. I copied the Internet Explorer folder from C:\Program
Files to D:\Program Files, changed my Program Files setting back to D:,
logged out and back in. WU still shows that update as not installed.
Changed Program Files back to C: and WU shows no updates needed.
I hope you didn't mean to copy my entire C:\Program Files folder to D:,
because it is almost a gig. If so, I'll just leave it this way and install
new apps to D: manually.
Thanks, Dan

To be honest, it was just a guess ;o)

That's indeed at least curios (not to write "annoying").

Fine and thanks for the feedback!

I highly doubt that. Anyone in here remembers the story of KB835732
back in May 2004 for instance? ;-(

Bye,
Freudi
