Hi,

After applying the KB896688 update ActiveX (flash, capicom) on pages
stopped working on some computers. The only resolution to it is to
uninstall the update, other tips didn't work (eg. reregistering ole32,
adding the site to the trusted sites, ...).

The MS05-052 bulltein says:
This update introduces additional checks before a COM object is allowed
to run in Internet Explorer. The intent of this change is to prevent COM
objects that were not designed to be instantiated in Internet Explorer
from being instantiated in Internet Explorer.

Is there any info what additional checks were introduced? Maybe it is
the problem. I've found that other people also reported this problem and
it is not only on my computer. I think that the machines with XP SP2 are
affected but I cannot test on more computers. Any MVP here?

regards,
mircu

Hi,

See if this helps:

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here:

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

You may have to reboot your machine afterwards.

Regards,
Torgeir

Did you reboot? Which AntiVirus scanner are you using? Has it
been running while installing any update?

Yes, there was a reboot. We are using Symantec Antivirus and it has been
running all the time. Do you think it can be a problem? We have got
machines where this scanner has been running and update worked ok.

Yup.

Using Symantec products is IMO like playing Russian Roulette. It may
work to some extend, but sooner or later...
