KB896688 fix via regedit

All this is fine, but what about those of us who cannot install this update?
I fall into the group with Program Files existing also in another
partition/drive. My setup was made by installing windows xp2, creating
partitions, then using regedit to change the default program files dir to
e:\program files. The original program files still exists on c: drive - some
programs will not work unless they are there. eg VET. Internet Explorer is
still on the c: drive. When i did an update a subsidiary Internet Explorer
folder appeared in my erogrm files folder, [MUI > 0409]: i moved it to the
c: ieploree folder; it seems happy.
FIne; to try to get KB896688 in, i regedited default program files back to
c:. BUt no, it would not install. Would you like to see the log?

Well, if %programfiles% isn't identical to %systemdrive%\Program Files
installing KB896688 will fail anyway.

Is the Cryptographic service running?

A service named Cryptographic service ;-) Start -> Run -> services.msc
Check whether it's running or not and/or if you can find some entries
in the eventlog (Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc).

If you're running AV software in the background, try the installation
after having the AV scanner completly disabled.

I am grateful for your prompt reply. crypt. services had started
[automatic], but i cannot find any references to it in the log files
[security, application & system]; when i regedited default pgm files to
c:\program files, %programfiles% is identical to %systemdrive%\program files
as to location. But if you mean the contents of c: and e: program files to be
identical well, they definitely are not. i killed my AV temporarily, even put
the firewall down momentarily, but i cannot seem to re-download the update in
question. even after manually deleting temp folder and inet files it lurks
still somewhere inside [download mgr reports a 0 byte dl for the update]. And
still it will not install. I rather think that i will have to wing it with
this update, and hope that MS provides a work-around that enables it to
install in machines with separate system and applications program file
folders.

pardon me, freudi, but i took a break from this procedure. ok, i run Vet
antivirus, and good ole SP2 firewall. Between them, they stop it all. Anyway,
i tried with them both deactivated. I also did try the copy c:Internet
Explorer files to e:internet explorer, but no luck - the installation of
KB896688 would not proceed. If the virus demons out there read this stuff, i
feel assured that they know they have a ready route into millions of pc's.....

I never suggested to disable Windows Firewall, but uninstall(!) your
AV software _temporary_.

As I've written in my very first reply, you _don't_ have the problem
of a "moved" Program Files folder - you have one with your Cryptographic
service. Have you tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 step by
step?

freudi, much thanks for your help, but i have given up.... I used that link u
show in your last post, got to the bit where i have to extract the file, but
cannot find the necessary switches in the KB articles at support. SO bugger
it - i have wasted much time doing this, and i really resent it. None of this
bitterness is aimed at you, just MS. I suspect it is not a problem of my
making - i have never altered any of that stuff before, have been taken
places in trying to fix this thing that i never wanted to visit. So if i get
a virus or whatever that breaks my computer cos of this issue, i hope that it
backdoors into the network and brings it down too. I am really ****ed off
about the time i have had to devote to this issue.

i might add that although i thus failed to do method 7, the certificates
checks in method 8 were correct.....

Sure it is! REGEDIT4 works for *every* yet released Windows version
while "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" only works with
Windows 2000, XP and 2003.
