KB896688- One last Try

Okay Cyber-Guys.....

I've been on the phone with Microsoft Tech support for an hour today. We
tried reinstalling IE6, we merged KB 909889.REG into the registry and still
no luck. With KB896688 installed, Flash Player, embedded media players, and
access to the Windows Update Page are all disabled. I've attached the
registry file that is supposed to fix the problem. Tech support is left with
reinstalling Windows (over Windows) as the only option left, but assure me
that I don't really need the update anyway! If anyone can figure this out
(without the OS reinstall)................ they get a free copy of my new
CD!

Marcus

And which programs are running in the background? Yes list all of them!
You're on Windows 98, right?

Which is the same like the well known OLE_fix.reg included in the
OLEfix.zip.

Pardon? I highly doubt that an MS tech stated you won't need to apply
KB896688. You need to, trust me.

Hi Freudi,

I've tried installing the update from a stand alone exe file that Tech
support (e-mail) sent me a while back, and I installed in Safe Mode. The
name of this file is: IE6Osp-1-KB896688Windows98-ME-x86-ENU.exe. So as far
as which programs are running, I don't believe there were any but explorer,
systray, scanregistry, KB891711, and possibly Total Recorder scheduler. (Of
course I've tried installing through the Update site several times, as
well.)

Yes indeed, I was assured by: "Karandeep" that I really didn't need this
update because my systen wouldn't accept it! Hmmmmmmm!

Thanks for continuing to give this a go.

Marcus

Disable at least KB891711 temporary and the other ones listet via msconfig
for Autostart.

Did you disabled them via msconfig *and* rebooted afterwards?

No need to.

And the other symptoms like non functional ActiveX controls?

There's definitly no "NoWindowsUpdate" key in the registry in
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Policies\Explorer"?

There's definitly the "(Standard)" key with the value
"{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}" in the
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\CLS ID" and in the
"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\CLSID" keys?

I just set up a VM running plain Windows 98SE.
I've installed IE 6 SP1 only and afterwards went to the Windows Update
site. Installed all 22 Important Updates which have been offered with
KB896688 among them. Let all updates download, install and rebooted.
No problem what so ever...

There's definitly no "NoWindowsUpdate" key in the registry in
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Policies\Explo

There's definitly the "(Standard)" key with the value
"{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}" in the
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\CLS ID" and in the

..they are there!

To be honest, I think those experiments could make the situation only
worse.

>> And the other symptoms like non functional ActiveX
>> controls?

> Do Not Function with KB896688 installed

Ehm, you mean, ActiveX controls don't work at all, right?

>> There's definitly no "NoWindowsUpdate" key in the registry in

Okay. That's true for the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\...\Policies\Explorer key too,
right?

>> There's definitly the "(Standard)" key with the value

Then you have another issue which seems to be very -ehm- special.

Once again, disable *all* the programs loading with Windows via
msconfig -> Autostart.

Reboot.

Uninstall KB896688.

Reboot.

Let KB896688 download and install again via Windows Update.

Reboot.

Do *not* use any REG file and check, whether the "CLSID" keys are
present now or not.

And yes, please stop "playing around" trying to solve the problem yourself.
Otherwise any help attempt will definitly be condemned to fail. Since
nobody is sitting on your machine but you and nobody else is seeing what
you're doing and seeing on your system, there has to be a basis for those
trying to help. Provide as much information on your system and exact error
messages you're seeing and _when_ you're seeing them.

What's the exact error message?

I'm sure you're aware of http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/updt9xad.htm and
tried some of the suggestions. Which ones? Was http://tinyurl.com/aj76n
among those you've tried?

Can you definitly rule out any malware on your system?

Bye,
Freudi

No Malware......I clean it out regularly.

When you say "disable all the programs loading with Windows via
msconfig -> Autostart" you mean ALL the items in the 'startup'
menu.....including systray and scanreg?
