Anyone know what's going on with Microsoft's fix for the problems caused by
this problem ridden October update?

Since noone knows, what you're referring to, nobody could answer
your question. What you mind elaborating?

The 'fix' for issues caused by KB896688 is documented in KB909889 --
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909889
ActiveX controls may not load as expected in Internet Explorer due to defense
in depth changes introduced in cumulative security update 896688 (MS05-052)

Thank you so much for posting this!
Microsoft has killed their own updater with that update, along with ActiveX,
so they can't even fix it for you.
Perhaps they should take out some ad space to let people know how to fix
this. It seems fairly widespread.

Brian

That's what it seems, but it isn't in fact.

BTW: http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip contains the "Fix"
as a REG file which works on every Windows version, while the
"Fix" described in the KB article works only for Windows 2K/XP/
2K3 due to the "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" line.

It's unconscionable that Microsoft has left this, (another seriously flawed
and problematic update) on their WU site. They should at least remove it
until a fix is published that actually works with a simple installation
........without sending us through all kinds of hoops that may or may not
work. This http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip should be part of a
new update, not something that we have to spend our precious time sleuthing
through myriads of links and Newsgroup postings to find. In my case, this
'OLE" fix did not solve the problem. It didn't work at all, as a matter of
fact. I don't know how you folks feel about it, but Microsoft is exploiting
their virtual monopoly by sending faulty updates........software they
obviously do not thoroughly test out. That, they leave to us.......their
guinea pigs. You'd think with their recent 25% profit margins they could
afford a little quality control.

If you were to go to the Microsoft Knowledge Base and search for the keyword
"896688", you would have found this KB article, along with a couple of others,
listed for over two weeks. :-)

On top of that, it's only been discussed in /this/ newsgroup every day since
October 13th. A simple search on this newsgroup for keyword "896688" would
also have turned up /several/ references to this fix. :-)
