KB898458 install problem

For several weeks I get the nagging message to install the already downloaded
KB898458 update. Every time it reports to have installed successfully, only
to pop up a few seconds later that it is ready to install.

I've even tried to download and update the KB898458 update. Nothing seems
to work.

platform: XP-home edition (fully updated except the KB898458 issue)

Any suggestions?

Stefan

I suspect that another update may have brought one of these files to a
version number higher than that of the 898458 version -
Lrun32.exe 3.6.0.111 04-May-2005 22:45 1,077,312

Mrun32.exe 3.4.1.101 04-May-2005 23:17 1,028,160

Orun32.exe 3.5.0.117 04-May-2005 22:33 1,077,312

If you can give details of which file, we should be able to find a
workaround.

Hi Noel

I could only find one instance of each file and except for the time stamp
everything is the same as you wrote; the file versions match.

I tried to move all the files in this directory
(windows\softwaredistribution\download\52c3 ...etc) to another directory. A
notification came that it was impossible to install and after downloading
again, the same issue arose: installation only to be followed for a
notification of the need for a installation of KB898458.

It's no surprise that the files you found won't move - that's a protected
folder in XP (although I'm yet to be convinced that that is a good idea!<g>)

Unfortunately, the fact that they are *there* and not elsewhere, means that
either you have not set the Folder View options correctly, or the files
don't exist where they should!!

Where to go from here?
First, try resetting your Folder View options so that you are able to see
both Hidden, and System Files/Folders (TWO settings!) - repeat the search
and see what you get.

If you get the same result, then it's a distinct possibility that you have
either
1) improperly uninstalled the 'Step-by-Step' training
or
2) your OEM never installed it properly in the first place

Is there an entry for the 898458 update in Add/Remove Programs??
If so, then try uninstalling and reinstalling it - which could solve the
problem

Is there an entry for it in Add/Remove Programs?
Do you have the CD available for installing it?

If the answer is Yes/Yes - then try uninstalling and reinstalling the beast,
and then doing the update (again!!)

Let us know what happens....
(and I admit, I'm scrabbling for ideas - since I've never seen the
'Step-by-Step' software!)

Sorry - I got myself confused there!!<g>

The second half should read......

Is there an entry for it **(Step-by-Step)** in Add/Remove Programs?
Do you have the CD available for installing it?

If the answer is Yes/Yes - then try uninstalling and reinstalling the beast,
and then doing the update (again!!)

Let us know what happens....
(and I admit, I'm scrabbling for ideas - since I've never seen the
