Perhaps the reason is because the characteristics for this update are - “0
KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)”. It appears that there is
nothing to update but the entry is there.

When I want to restart my computer, the Turnoff Computer page informs me
that I must “click Turn Off to install important updates”. This condition is
the result when I check for MS updates or when auto updates is checked.

Whenever I ask Microsoft if there are any updates, the above item is always
there. I would like to get rid of it.

There are no error messages that I could see except for the one that the
update did not succeed.

How do I get rid of the above?

Thank you - Vic

TaurArian, I thank you very much. I used the first address and everything
worked perfectly.

Installation for Windows XP (KB898461) item was completed successfully. The
installation of this item resulted in 42 more updates to be installed. All
was OK – with dialup, it took 3 hours, 40 minutes for the 42 items.

Again, I thank you.

Vic – have a nice day

Hi.. here is the solution
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;916246

SYMPTOMS
When you use Automatic Updates or the Windows Update Web site to try to
install software update 898461 in Microsoft Windows XP, the installation
fails. The Windows Update History log shows that the update installation was
canceled.

CAUSE
This issue can occur if there is a problem with the Spupdsvc.exe file. The
path of the file is %windir%:\Windows\System32\Spupdsvc.exe.

Note %windir% is a placeholder for the folder where Windows is installed.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, rename the Spupdsvc.exe file to a different file
name, such as SpupdsvcOld.exe.
