After 2 months of trying, Microsoft finally contacted me directly and today
they have spent two hours on the telephone / computer getting KB898461
Installer to download properly. It now seems that all updates since
November are fully downloaded thank goodness. My contact used the Microsoft
Easy Assist option by which you allow someone at Microsoft to take over your
system. It was good to see them trying some of the things tried by this
help forum and failing but also nice when it succeeded after much rebooting
and changing of file and index names.
If you still have problems it could be worth emailing the download support
address. It took us 3 email requests but, touch wood, it does seem to be OK
now....
Once they made personal contact and accepted the email receipt of KB and
windowsupdate logs it did get easier and we cannot fault the contact at
Microsoft for his patience and help.
