Windows XP SP2, automatic updates turned on, automatic updates
faithfully applied whenever they become available.

When KB900485 was notified on automatic updates I accepted it, as
usual. It appeared to apply successfully. That is, the usual update
dialogue said my computer was updated successfully.

But every couple of days Windows Update notifies me that KB900485 is
available. The implication is that I don't have it installed yet.

I checked in Add/Remove Programs with "show updates" checked. KB900485
is in the list.

I removed (uninstalled) KB900485.

Next time Windows Update announced it, I accepted it. After the
download and installation it said my computer was updated successfully.

Windows Updates still announces availability of KB900485 every couple
of days.

I used Add/Remove Programs to uninstall it again.

Next KB900485 shows up in a list of three patches. I accepted them. All
three were downloaded and installed successfully, according to the
dialogues.

Windows Update still announces availability of KB900485 every couple of
days.

I used Add/Remove Programs to uninstall KB900485. Then I manually
downloaded it from Microsoft.com and manually installed it.

Windows Update still announces availability of KB900485 every couple of
days.

Add/Remove Programs shows it in the list of installed patches.

It's driving me batty. What do I do to convince Windows Update that the
patch is installed???????????????????

Try reading the group before you post. Most questions have already been answered.

Your fix is Courtesy of Serge <>

Copy the new "aec.sys" over the old one.
The new version is 5.1.2601.2180
The old version is 5.1.2601.2078

Copy the one from "C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB900485\SP2QFE" or "C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386"
to
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers"

Reading a group this size to try to find a specific problem is lunacy
... something only those with way too much time on their hands should
attempt. I did, however, try a number of searches on the group to try
to find something useful. Clearly my search strategies were
ineffective. My bad.

In any case, I have tried the recommended solution with no success.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers now contains AEC.SYS with a version of
5.1.2601.2180. I rebooted to get rid of the update notification.
Shortly after the reboot, the same notification for KB900485 is back.

Any other thoughts?

My latest attempt...

With the latest version of AEC.SYS in the c:\windows\system32\drivers
folder, copied there as per Serge's instructions, I used Add/Remove
Programs to remove KB900485.

After the successful removal I checked and the patch folder is gone
from c:\windows\$hf_mig$ but the latest AEC.SYS is still in the
c:\windows\system32\drivers folder.

I powered the PC down. Not a Restart, a Power Off. Waited 30 seconds
and powered up.

The Windows Update notifier is gone and has not returned. That was
about half an hour ago. We'll see what happens next.

This latest attempt seems to be the final answer to the problem. Simply
using Serge's instructions to copy the AEC.SYS file did not resolve the
problem. It required using Add/Remove Programs to remove the KB900485
update, while making sure that the latest version of AEC.SYS is in the
correct folder. Even though the KB900485 patch is not installed and is
not listed in Add/Remove Programs, having the latest version of AEC.SYS
seems to make Windows Update satisfied that the patch is not necessary.
That's my guess. Whatever the real reason, at least Windows Update has
quit trying to persuade me to install KB900485.
