I tried to auto update these two updates but they continually fail. I tried
to download them individually and install but get the following error
message. "files from the package are incompatible with files on your
system". They are "high priority" updates but I can't get them to install.
The system is a dell running win xp home edition sp2. I just recovered from
trying to install sp3 that crashed the system, so I've been updating for
almost a day now but these are the last two that won't install.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Lou

Tell us more about this and how you "recovered".

I did not see the actual error but from what I understand the message was
"missing file in servicepackfolder and then uninstall windows xp". After
this the computer went into continious reboot mode, couldn't perform safe
mode or last known. I used the xp recovery cd SP1 installed and repaired, I
was able to keep all information intact on the system but need to reinstall
SP2 and all updates between.

If you're now running WinXP SP1, you can skip SP2 and the 100 or so post-SP2
updates and install SP3.

1. Download WinXP SP3 (316.4 MB), SAVING the file to your desktop:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...8-1e1555d4f3d4

2. Read & heed:

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

Steps to take before you install WinXP SP3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

3. Double-click on the save file to install SP3.

4. Reboot *twice*.

5. Check in at Windows Update and install any critical updates offered. [I
would NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update, myself.]

6. If you find that the critical updates will not install, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144.

7. Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled.
