If you're now running WinXP SP1, you can skip SP2 and the 100 or so post-SP2
updates and install SP3.
1. Download WinXP SP3 (316.4 MB), SAVING the file to your desktop:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...8-1e1555d4f3d4
2. Read & heed:
WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation

Steps to take before you install WinXP SP3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717
3. Double-click on the save file to install SP3.
4. Reboot *twice*.
5. Check in at Windows Update and install any critical updates offered. [I
would NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update, myself.]
6. If you find that the critical updates will not install, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144.
7. Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled.
