KB904706 / cygwin Conflict

I just ran into an issue where KB904706 for Windows 2000 would hang during
the installation.

Stopping the sshd service (based on cygwin) allowed the update to be
installed successfully. If I tried to cancel the install, I wouldn't see any
cancellation dialog until the sshd service stopped.

I noticed that the cygrunsrv process was showing high CPU utilization; when
I stopped the service, the KB904706 "Installation Cancelled" dialog box
popped up.
Odd...I guess cygwin makes heavy use of quartz.dll.

Hope this helps someone else.

I have the same problem. KB904706 hangs on Windows 2000. I re-installed
DirectX 9c, but no difference. I tried a manual install, no difference. I
believe MS needs to take a look at this!!

I ran into the same hanging problem trying to install KB904706 for Windows
2000, both from the web site and manually, on my Dell Inspiron 4000 with a
Synaptics TouchPad. The only way I could cancel the installation was to go
through Task Manager and End Task. While there, I noticed that my CPU usage
was at 100% and that the TouchPad application was using 60-80%, even though
it usually only uses 1-2%. Usually, System Idle uses the highest percentage,
but it was reading 0%. I experimented, and the TouchPad usage leaped and
System Idle usage plummetted as soon as the install began -- very strange
since the TouchPad should have absolutely nothing to do with the update,
installation or Direct X. Also, during last attempt to install, discovered
"Do you want to cancel?" dialog box only after trying ALT+Tab on a whim. The
Reporting Events log showed, "Failure Content Install Installation Failure:
Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800706be:
Security Update for DirectX 9 for Windows 2000 (KB904706)." There's
definitely something wrong with this update -- very rushed and sloppy
programming, I would say.

I had the same problem with 100% CPU usage and other issues with Direct X
when the first installation attempt failed. Many more attempts later by the
automatic update continued to fail. I even tried installing manually but
failed just the same. Then I examined the Event Viewer logs and noticed that
even if I disabled my antivirus, there was a process that was stopping the
update process. I rebooted under safe mode and manually installed the update.
It completed successfully. However the update history showed a status of
cancelled. The good news is that MBSA analyzer showed all required updates
were accounted for. Also, Windows Update does not list any critical updates
anymore. You should also run DXDiag because I noticed that the Direct3D
Acceleration feature of DirectX, under the Display tab, was disabled. I had
to re-enable it to run the 3D test.

I have a Dell Latitude C600 and encountered the same problem with
installation of KB904706 hanging. After seeing the post by BellaBambina, I
found the same thing -that the TouchPad application was using excessive CPU
time. I stopped the TouchPad with Task Manager and was then able to install
KB904706 using Windows Update. Thank you!

The other suggestions in this thread didn't work for me - although I have
CygWin installed it wasn't running, and trying to install the update from
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms05-050.mspx, as
suggested by jimjimbo, didn't solve the problem in my case. (I didn't try
safe mode, as suggested by Tito_D).

Thanks EthanH ! I had 100% the same effect as observed by you and
BellaBambina and did solve it same way as you. It seems to me, that KB904706
has a problem with notebooks only (I use a HP Omnibook XE3). All other
W2K_SP4 clients as well as the W2K Servers, didn't have this observed hangup
and installed the update very quickly. I recommend that Microsoft immediately
investigates this conflict.

I had this problem on w2k sp4. I downloaded the exe from the site
below, instead of MS Update. I ended up stopping all services, after
rebooting and BEFORE attempting to start the install, that may depend
on cygwin, such as sshd, cron, etc., removing <drive>:\cygwin\bin; from
the PATH directive (so that it can't find the cygwin programs and
dlls), closing all additional programs that are cygwin programs, and
then running the MS update.

On a sidenote, when it finally did install, it failed to create the
appropriate registry keys/uninstall information. This was on a
Windows 2000 SP4 Machine.

I was forced to create the key

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows 2000\SP5\KB904706\Filelist

to enable Cisco Clean Access to let me get on with my life and finally
recognize that the patch was indeed installed.

Thank you! Not being a real technical user I was able to install the update
in safe mode and it worked. However, thank you for the Cisco Clean Access
information. My daughter's school uses this program and she would not have
been able to get back on the network unless I saw Kelly's note about adding
the registry key (of course I had to get help with that one). Once I did
that she was back in business. Thank you for the info!
