KB905474 Install Fails and Locks Computer

I downloaded the KB905474 patch on Tuesday as part of Automatic Windows
Update, but it failed to install, and has failed on every subsequent attempt.
My computer now completely locks up whenever I browse to a page with ActiveX
controls, or try to install the patch again - which means I can't download
the Windows Validation Assistant from Microsoft, and visiting the Windows
Update site causes my computer to completely lock up. My computer is also
running extremely slowly, when it runs at all. I have tried restoring it to a
Monday checkpoint twice and a checkpoint in mid-April and then reinstalling
the patch several time without success, as the update installation still
hangs every time I try to install. I have also tried changing the registry
permissions for the patch manually, and run WGADiag2.exe without success.
Googling the problem it seems I'm not alone in this problem, although few
people seem to have their computers totally crashing on them. I have an AMD
3800+, 1GB RAM, nVidia 6800, 200GB and 300GB hard drives, fully updated
drivers and a legitimate copy of Windows XP Pro. Is there a solution to my
problem other than restoring to Monday once more and disabling Windows
Updates?

No thats the solution, turn off Auto Updates, get them manually and be
selectice. Critical Updates are not always "critical" MS have put Beta
Spyware in your machine (KB_905474)

Recent major problems re Crashing and Locking up were caused by
KB908531, there is a revised issue on MSFTs site somewhere.

Where do I locate them to install them manually? Without the latest patch I
can't see what other patches are available from the Windows Update site; is
there an area on microsoft.com where I can download them manually (like
network installation versions) without the need for Genuine Advantage
validation (which crashes my computer every single time)?
