I have KB905474 Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications installed in my
Add/remove programs (under Windows XP - Software updates) - date of
installation is 10/11/2008. I also have KB892130 showing as a separate entry
installed on 14/8/2007 and then under Windows XP - Software updates it
appears again as KB892130 installed on 1/3/2007. I notice that there is a
directory in the C:\windows\system32 folder for KB905474. It is the only
update that appears in there as a separate folder.

Many months ago I got prompted again to download KB905474 as an automatic
update. It downloaded OK, but then failed installation. I am guessing this is
because it was already installed. As it failed to install Automatic updates
kept detecting it as needing to be installed which became annoying.

I was advised at the time to go into Windows updates and select to make it
"hidden". This stopped it from appearing in Automatic updates.

However I feel something is not quite right. I didn't seem to be getting
Automatic updates all that often. Recently I went into Windows updates
manually and checked.

After clicking the "express" option, I got the instruction that files
required to perform the update were missing or not registered and to click to
resolve that. So I clicked and it downloaded and registered the files - went
to 100%. I then went back to try again and got the message that the page
could not display properly.

However on restarting the computer this was resolved and I was able to
access Windows updates again.

I'm not sure what caused this because I was previously able to get into
Windows updates, however I had done some serious registry editing recently
and run some scans on my computer that might have messed things up a bit. It
was not malware because I'm sure there was no malware on the computer. I have
been training in malware removal and part of this is testing out malware
removal tools to see how they work. It is possible I ran something on my
clean computer that removed something that shouldn't have been removed.

Anyway that issue is fixed and is of no concern now. I just mention it for
the sake of completeness.

When I did get to the updates however, I had 16 updates to do. This
concerned me because it seems as though perhaps Automatic updates has not
been working. Everything is turned on for Automatic updates and reports as
OK. I have Kaspersky and it is set right for the firewall.

I'm just wondering whether the failure of being able to install this second
905474 has anything to do with it. I know I have a genuine copy of Windows
and I have never had problems with validation notifications or the like. When
I first had to run the tool in order to get some updates it went through OK
and reported that my Windows was validated.

I will watch carefully to see if the next Windows updates arrive via
Automatic updates or not.

Is there anything else I can check out?

I have already tried the manual download of 905474 but on running the tool
it reports that the system pack I have is a newer version and it cannot be
installed. (However I don't know if the manual pack I downloaded is the
latest version as I just clicked a link to the manual download in another
thread).

I'm wondering if the first install of 905474 is done correctly - I would
uninstall it and start again but it cannot be uninstalled.

ozegirl,

Whether a system has KB905474 installed or not has no correlation to
the *automatic* download and installation of Security updates. In fact,
the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification application does *not* have
to be installed as it's *optional*. Windows Genuine Advantage must be
installed in order to use the *Windows/Microsoft Update sites* but is
*not* required if one chooses to use Automatic Updates to keep the
system up to date in regards to Security updates.

Kaspersky may have prevented the installation of the updating components
to finish properly thus the reboot circumvented this issue or, *more
likely*, the files were in use and could not be replaced until a reboot
occurred.

Well stranger than fiction. After doing my 16 windows updates I decided I may
as well do Microsoft update and be done with it. So I did that (several
updates there for Office etc) and restarted computer. I couldn't believe when
yet again Automatic updates asked if I wanted to install KB905474 (it was
already downloaded). Especially as I had used option to hide the update. I
hadn't been asked to install this update for months since setting it to
hidden. Anyway I thought I may as well give it a go, so clicked and the thing
installed! The date of it hasn't changed at all. I can only imagine that it
wasn't installed correctly before, or maybe it was but there was a further
update which was prevented from being installed by something (not Kaspersky
since it's set to accept all Microsoft updates). Anyway problem resolved.
