I'm not sure if Dial-a-fix is a panacea or a placebo:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Dial-a-fix
It is willing to treat WinME. If it works for you, let us know.

that page is not relevant, since the compatibility patch does not exist for
users of ME, and there has been no change to any of the patches involved in
ME, AFAIK.

I used the dial-a-fix on one of my fully updated ME systems yesterday - and
was rather disconcerted when it popped up with a 'you must reboot before
proceeding to more fixes' message - while continuing to finish the set of
fixes I had decided to apply.
If you are going to try this tool, download the FULL set - but only apply
one fix at a time, and check afterwards whether a reboot may be required (if
a c:\windows\wininit.ini file exists, then it's a sure sign that a reboot
would be a good thing!)

Thanks for that Noel saved me a lot of grief tomorrow morning. Spent enough
time on this problem methinks. Would you possibly recommend a
reformat/reinstall? OR wait to see if a planned fix in June will take us poor
soles Me/98 into account.

Microsoft Update drops WinME the day after July 11, 2006:
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecyc...1=6519&x=7&y=9
Online self-help support will continue for a year after that.

If you stick with WinME you're going to have to get resourceful.
Dial-a-fix is easier than a format. I've had no problems with the
v0.58 beta. It looks like you could do section 1 Prep, then run
section 5's (Registration center's) ActiveX controls/codecs.

Do some other prep called for at http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
You'd need at least the Medium download; most downloaders
are doing as Noel advises and going full. For XPsp2 I went light.

*Which* problems exactly?

Ah, you may try http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip -
extract the contained OLE_fix.reg file and double click that one to
let it merge into the registry. The REG file does the changes for
you which are mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909889
except the REG file is for Windows 98/Me too.

In case that won't help even after a restarting *all* IE windows, do
you have a Personal Firewall Software installed? Which AV-scanner?

Bye,
Freudi

ActiveX not supported. Firewall - ZoneAlarm AV - AVG Going to try
Michaels suggestion next. Do you know if Firefox and Opera experience the
same problems as IE?

O.K. Michael going for it. Restore point created etc. Let both you and Noel
how I get on this evening.

Tried the Medium version first, then full (Dial-a-fix) unfortunatly neither
did the business. This is the error received:-

Possible causes of this error are:
Not allowing the application's ActiveX control to be downloaded.
Problems with the Internet connection.
The error could be due to a download error or an installation error due to
lack of hard disk space, privileges etc.,...

AFAIK, There has been NO limit set on the online self-help support (of which
these newsgroups are a significant part)... witness the fact that Win95
groups are still available on the MS servers (and there is still a WFWG
group available as well)!
