KB908531 and HP Software

Like almost everyone else who has posted here over the last few days, I had
the same problems accessing files with Windows Explore after installing the
KB908531 security update. I do have HP Share-to-Web software because I have
an HP camera, but not a scanner or a printer. My problems were resolved
temporarily by using WinXP’s restore function, but since I forgot to turn off
“Automatic Updates” KB908531 was back and installed that night and yesterday
my problems came back with it.

I decided to use what "Pa Bear" described in several other postings as
Option 2 (use Task Manager to end “hpgs2wnd.exe” and “hpgs2wnf.exe”). That
worked immediately and seemed like a reasonably painless way to have a
functional computer with the security afforded by KB908531, until a permanent
fix is developed.

Hours later, I noticed that for some reason “hpgs2wnf.exe” was again active,
but I could still access files and folders in Windows Explorer. That seemed
strange, but OK.

Since updates were on my mind, last night I downloaded and installed Windows
Media Player 10. When it rebooted “hpgs2wnd.exe” and “hpgs2wnf.exe” were
again both active. But before ending them with Task Manager, I opened
Windows Explorer and found that I had no problem accessing files and folders.

I don’t understand it. I now have both the XP908531 update and HP
Share-to-Web software installed with both “hpgs2wnd.exe” and “hpgs2wnf.exe”
active, but I’m not having any problems accessing files and folders like I
did 3 days ago.

I haven’t run through the setup for Windows Media Player 10 or installed its
KB911565 security update yet. I’ll look for horror stories about that update
before I go any further.

Touché, Freudi. Please accept my sincere apology for questioning your
planetary residence. After perusing this newsgroup for the last few days, I
can see that you are one of the dedicated people out there trying to help
schmucks like me who only show up when we have a problem.

By the way, HP’s SP26273.exe critical update applies to HP’s Memories Disc
Creator software, which I don’t have, but I downloaded it and it failed to
install, saying that it wasn’t needed, as I expected.

Again, my system’s working and I have both the KB908531 update and HP
Share-to-Web software installed with both “hpgs2wnd.exe” and “hpgs2wnf.exe”
active. The only difference I can think of is that “hpgs2wnd.exe” and
possibly “hpgs2wnf.exe” were shut down the last time KB908531 was installed.

Hope, it didn't hurt too much though ;o)

No problem, I'm aware of the moments when frustration about a problem
caused by anything turns to be reflected on those trying to help. I'm
just too long in the "business".

I expected that to (not) happen too <g>

If that's fine for you, that's fine for me too.
In the meantime (last night from Old Europe), MS has released a new
KB article dealing with the cavets after installing KB908531:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165/en-us

Since the KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip does already what's mentioned
there according humbling trough the registry, there's no need to
change anything. The KB article now mentions Kerio Firewall as
another source of problems after installing KB908531. If you don't
have that one installed, you're fine.

Happy Easter,
Freudi
