| Like almost everyone else who has posted here over the last few days, I had
| the same problems accessing files with Windows Explore after installing the
| KB908531 security update. I do have HP Share-to-Web software because I have
| an HP camera, but not a scanner or a printer. My problems were resolved
| temporarily by using WinXP’s restore function, but since I forgot to turn off
| “Automatic Updates” KB908531 was back and installed that night and yesterday
| my problems came back with it.
|
| I decided to use what "Pa Bear" described in several other postings as
| Option 2 (use Task Manager to end “hpgs2wnd.exe” and “hpgs2wnf.exe”). That
| worked immediately and seemed like a reasonably painless way to have a
| functional computer with the security afforded by KB908531, until a permanent
| fix is developed.
|
| Hours later, I noticed that for some reason “hpgs2wnf.exe” was again active,
| but I could still access files and folders in Windows Explorer. That seemed
| strange, but OK.
|
| Since updates were on my mind, last night I downloaded and installed Windows
| Media Player 10. When it rebooted “hpgs2wnd.exe” and “hpgs2wnf.exe” were
| again both active. But before ending them with Task Manager, I opened
| Windows Explorer and found that I had no problem accessing files and folders.
|
| I don’t understand it. I now have both the XP908531 update and HP
| Share-to-Web software installed with both “hpgs2wnd.exe” and “hpgs2wnf.exe”
| active, but I’m not having any problems accessing files and folders like I
| did 3 days ago.
|
| I haven’t run through the setup for Windows Media Player 10 or installed its
| KB911565 security update yet. I’ll look for horror stories about that update
| before I go any further.
