I can see that many users are having problems with this update "Security
Uptate KB908531." It installs a new file called verclsid.exe, which seems to
be causing many problems. In the description of the update it says it is
related to Windows Explorer vunerabilities.

When I installed this update it disables part of Windows Explorer. When I
open Explorer, I can highlight items on left pane, double-click items in
right pane, but if I click on a + (the plus sign) on any folder in the left
plane, the program hangs. I get the hourglass and it will do nothing. When I
finally hit ctrl/alt/del it says program is not responing. All I can do then
is close the program.

No matter how many methods I use to try and install this update, the result
is always the same.

I have noticed many users having other issues with this update on this post.

Any help or info from a professional Microsoft tech would be greatly
appreciated. Until then I will not attempt any more installation of this
update.

If you have used this update and are experiencing problems, I would
recommend using system restore to restore your system to a point before this
update, until it is solved.

Steven

Steven,
My experience with this nightmare since yesterday may be of interest to you
and others. I tried the system restore feature which did nothing other than
remove the updates from the add/remove programs list. Even if you remove the
restore point, the updates still do not list. As a result, now you cant
remove the update, which wont really remove anyway.
I followed another suggestion and renamed the file verclsid.exe to
verclsidold.exe which has solved all of my immediate problems, which were
centered around IE locking up and the inability to navigate.
Hopefully this may assist you until Microsoft gets out of their coffee
break. I noticed that the update website still wants me to install 908531.
Are they listening?

Thanks for the info Chuck. I am okay though. I had no problem reaching a
system restore point before the update. My system is fine at the moment, but
without the update. I am just leaving it at that until Microsoft shows up.

I strongly advise checking whether these users have HP software
installed. We have had a number of machines with this problem. The
common factor? HP Share-to-web application. Removed application and
problem is solved.

I am having the same problem. Last night I installed the update. Today, if I
go into an application, such as Excel or Word and try to search for a file,
the application stops responding. Also, windows explorer is also acting up.
Won't close, etec. On my desktop I was HP Share-to-web application, but I do
not see it in the listing of programs to install or delete. Your help would
be very much appreciated.

Thanks a million - struggled all day with this, removed Share-To-Web (which
I've never used) and everything works perfectly.

Well, you guys were right on! I uninstalled my HP Share-To-Web program (which
I has never used) and the update installed fine, and I have no problems now.
I just hope I don't need that HP program sometime in the future.
Thanks,
Steven
