See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=909444
for the full article.
Systems that have changed the default Access Control List settings on the
%windir%\registration directory may experience various problems after you
install the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051 for COM+ and MS DTC
SYMPTOMS
On a computer that is running Microsoft XP, Microsoft Windows 2000 Server,
or Windows Server 2003, one or more problems may occur after you install the
critical update that is discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051.
These problems include the following: . The Windows Installer service may
not start.
. The Windows Firewall Service may not start.
. The Network Connections folder is empty.
. The Windows Update Web site may incorrectly recommend that you
change the Userdata persistence setting in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
. Active Server Pages (ASP) pages that are running on Microsoft
Internet Information Services (IIS) return an "HTTP 500 - Internal Server
Error" error message.
. The Microsoft COM+ EventSystem service will not start.
. COM+ applications will not start.
. The computers node in the Microsoft Component Services Microsoft
Management Console (MMC) tree will not expand.
. Authenticated users cannot log on, and a blank screen appears after
the users apply the October Security Updates.

has anyone had any luck with the supplied Microsoft fix? I've
tried all their recommended steps and still have the issues on a number of
machines. They indicate they are working with customers for a resolution but
when I callled to get said help they were going to charge me...

- our machines cannot see any network places and subsequently appear to be
having access issues with saving to network shares...

Andrew.... (and to all WU/MU/SUS/WSUS users, since this message was
cross-posted to all three groups, and I'm going to maintain the crossposting
for my response since it affects all three environments):

There have been issues reported with two different updates. MS posted the
'fix' for issues posted against KB902400, but they've not yet posted
anything (to my knowledge) responding to potential issues with KB896688.

I would suggest uninstalling both updates to confirm that the symptoms
mentioned are, in fact, caused by one or the other of those updates, and
then reinstall the updates in the order KB896699 and then KB902400.

I applied the KB909444 'fix' to my test system, and it appears to have
solved the KB902400 issue I was experiencing with ActiveX and VS2005;
however, I had also confirmed that the documented permissions were correct
before applying the KB909444 'fix', so I'm not totally convinced that the
%windir%\registration permissions were contributing in my case.

One other variable I'm still researching is the order of installation. I had
installed KB902444, but deferred installation of KB896688, in response to
early reports that it was causing problems. I'm looking at the possibility
that there might be a patch dependency between those two patches. I should
have a collection of test results later today.

If you reinstall KB896688 and observe the symptoms, then the KB909444 'fix'
would not be the one you need.

If after installing KB896699, you install KB902400, and everything works, it
may be possible evidence supporting my patch dependency theory. If it
doesn't work, and the KB909444 'fix' doesn't fix it, then you need to report
your situation to PSS immediately.

Affected users may find some joy in the FAQ section (referencing kill bit

Thank you PA Bear... so the ultimate answer to failures traced to KB896688
is to refer to KB870669

I'll add that to my "see KB909444 for issues with KB902400" list of 'fixes'.
:-)

Possibly, assuming the section I referenced applies to the situation:

<QP>
Note: If you are running an application in a corporate intranet environment,
and the corporate intranet environment currently uses the ADODB.Stream
object with Internet Explorer, applying this update may cause the
application to break. To restore application functionality, we recommend
that you first set your Internet Explorer browser security level to High,
and then you must clear the compatibility flag of the ADODB.Stream object.
See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 870669 for more information about how
to affect this change.
</QP>

I will stress "set your Internet Explorer browser security level to High" to
all who investigate the possibility of restoring functionality by clearing
the compatibility flag of the ADODB.Stream object.

Hey guys, thanks for your help on this. Im still having issues with three
clients where this patch was installed. Ive followed the fix in regards to
the \registration folder uninstalled/reinstalled etc etc and cant seem to get
the pcs back to normal, its not a major issue as it just appears to be
happening on a few key IT personnal machines (mine included)

The annoying thing with it is reporduction. I have attempted to replicate
the issue on a number of test boxes and it won't cause the problem - securing
the folder and locking down security won't break it again. MS Australia
aren't being much help either??

any ideas?
