KB911280 Problems

I'm running WXP SP2. When I installed Update KB911280, my broadband ISP's
dialup access quit working. I was referred to
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=911280. For business reasons, it is
essential that I have dial-up access on my laptop. Since my ISP is not
likely to do anything to fix the problem within the next century, I need to
uninstall this update. I have two questions:

1) When I attempted to uninstall this update, I got a pop-up that warned the
following Windows programs may not function properly if I proceeded:
KB916281 and KB917953. I cancelled because I was not sure what to do. Do I
need to also uninstall these two updates?

2) The above linked bulletin stated that "Microsoft is working to develop
and test a revision to this update that will address this issue." Will this
revision be issued under the same number? If so, how will I know when it is
safe to allow this update to reinstall? If I don't uninstall the original
update, will I still get the revised version when it's available?

OK, that's more than two questions, but I need the dial-up access and I
don't know what to do! Thanks very much for your help.

jenny,

I had the same problem and as I had installed about 4 other patches at the
same time it mentioned all of them in the uninstall. I carried on and have
no problem since with dialup. You could always run Microsoft Update later
and see if it feels you are missing something.

I would just keep looking for the better version and use MS06-025 as the
reference.

Thanks, Chris - I can't live without the dial-up, so I'll charge ahead. I
appreciate your feedback. Jenny

Nope. You can/should ignore that stupid warning message which only lists
the updates/programs which were installed after the patch you're going
to uninstall.

Most likely yes, as "V2".

That's indeed a problem which isn't adressed by Microsoft or MS' update
mechanism. You may have to look for the MSKB article/security bulletin
to be updated, read this or the *.windowsxp.general newsgroup or even
followup on news under http://blogs.technet.com/msrc

Yes, most likely.

Hi Jenny,
Hope you check this website, wrote this two days after your post.
I had a problem with KB911280. My solution is not risky.

THE SOLUTION IS:
start>help & support> SYSTEM RESTORE
chose a restore point date just before the update was installed

you will only lose installs between this date and that
not lose documents etc

THEN:
start>control panel>automatic updates
switch updates off

THIS is just my thoughts:
Absolutely forget about trying to download all updates manually or
installing them
in trying to download 20 diferent updates one at a time
three did the same thing and knocked out network connections
and one locked me out of my computer by changing passwords
and one caused a complete system failure to boot

Why play "russian roulette" by installing updates?
In theory we need them but practicly they cause major crashes
Hope I havn't been to simplistic about your problem. If you absolutely need
KB911280 my solution is not even worth reading , but if you dont, my solution
will definately restore ISP connection.
My solution restores network conections for SURE.
bye
