That update item does indeed apply to XP (either SP1 or SP2), as well as several other Windows o.s.
This is the April 2006 Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. This link is to the security bulletin on Technet http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-013.mspx Question to you: what is the exact failure code in your case? Do look at your Windows Update log file, and "only" get the set of entries for the "last" date / or last session at Windows Update (or Automatic Updates). Use Notepad or Wordpad and take a look at (usually C:\WINNT or \Windows ) %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log Scan down to the bottom. Review contents. You need to look for entries marked "Error" such as 0x......... (where ....... are numbers) See KB 902093 How to read the Windowsupdate.log file http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093 Small tips: Before invoking Windows Update, empty your temporary internet cache and close your browser. Temporarily close & disable the antivirus before going to W U (re-enable after update completed). Close exit any 3rd-party popup blockers. Review your startup utility programs. My practice, (when I see that there is a cumulative (or major) IE patch, or, a significant update) is to shutdown my antivirus before getting or applying the update. Get & apply the update. Reboot the system (never delay the reboot for later). Once all clear, then re-activate AV. There are some AV programs that are way-too-sensative about updates to system components. They don't distinguish between good sources & ill sources. -- Maurice N MS-MVP Windows (Shell / User), Aumha.net VSOP , DTS-L ----- "Jørn Lodahl" <> wrote in message news:10C7D6CD-530A-4077-8592-... >I have XP SP2 running on a freshly installed Dell Inspiron 6000. thanks for your reply. I would expect this update to be applkicable, which is
in line with your reply. But 4/23/2006 Carey Frisch [MVP] wrotes: "KB912812 is designed for a system running Windows XP with Service Pack 1. If your system is running Service Pack 2, you should not install this update." So it is not so obvious who to believe. I tried an upodate again leading to error 0x80242008. Four lines from the log: 2006-05-05 19:47:27 1480 9fc Handler FATAL: UH: 0x80242008: GetNextRequiredFiles failed 2006-05-05 19:47:27 1480 9fc Handler FATAL: UH: 0x80242008: GetRequiredFilesForSandboxState failed 2006-05-05 19:47:27 1480 9fc DnldMgr FATAL: DM:CAgentDownloadManager::GenerateAllDownloadReque sts: GenerateDownloadRequest failed with 0x80242008. 2006-05-05 19:47:27 1480 9fc DnldMgr Error 0x80242008 occurred while downloading update; notifying dependent calls. I deactived Resident Shield in Free AVG which is the Anti Virus I use. Still the error occured. The I tried to download from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/t...yLang=en&oRef= Interrestingly enough this lead to a more helfull error message: "Setup cannot update your Windows XP files because the language installed on your system is different from the update language". This happened for English language as well as Danish (the language of my XP installation). Any further hints would be appreciated. Hello Jorn,
Yes, KB912812 applies if you have Internet Explorer with SP1 or SP2 (which you most certainly have if you have XP). This is a "cumulative update" for I.E. released in April 2006. (by the way, the update also applies to other Windows versions) The "error 0x80242008" means "The install was canceled via a handler method". Very obscure, no? Is your "Program Files" folder on the C: drive? Please check. Is your Windows installation on the C: drive? Please check. Next, from the Windows Start menu, choose RUN, then type in SERVICES.MSC <Enter-key> Check on these Windows services. In services management console ( services.msc) they must NOT be *Disabled* in the Startup type. They need to show a startup type of Manual or Automatic. Here are the services & their Startup types: Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS) Manual <<<--- yes, Manual is the correct startup type Cryptographic Services Automatic Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Automatic System Restore Service Automatic Housekeeping and cleanup steps: Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed. "CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders. Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders. Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types. Next un-check Hide protected operating system files. Use Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Windows\System32 If you have a sub-folder called * Catroot2 * (not Catroot) rename the folder to CR2OLD. Or delete everything in that folder. Just make sure you do the right one. (to clean up downloaded files for Automatic updates / Windows Update) From main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in CMD <Enter-key> type in net stop wuauserv <Enter-key> Go to Windows Explorer. Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT. Modify following as appropriate. If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads. Go back to Command prompt window. type in net start wuauserv <Enter-key> EXIT <Enter-key> You "may" consider getting the update from Microsoft Download Center. Following link is for Windows XP with service pack 2 *in Danish* ! "Sikkerhedsopdatering til Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB912812)" http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...1-4ACCEBF72133 Check on the items I mentioned above. IF your Program files are on other than C, please stop & post back. But as long as your Windows & Program files are on the same drive, it should be ok. If you have Internet Explorer 7, then definitely stop and post back. Download the update and "SAVE" it to your system in a new-unique folder. After download completes, close your browser. Close all your programs, including the Startup utilities. And temporarily disable your antivirus program. Use System Restore to save a new restore point. Run this update. Post back with full details. If it fails, post back & attach a copy of KB912812.log found in your \Windows or \WINNT folder. -- Maurice N MS-MVP Windows (Shell / User), Aumha.net VSOP , DTS-L ----- "Jørn Lodahl" wrote in message news:C558EE22-1DD5-49C3-893C-... > thanks for your reply. I leave em on and manually install any updates I think are necessary on a test PC to see what goes wrong first. After the last lfew weeks dispicable performance and especially with WGANotify Tray - A Beta App and totally unecessary installing Spyware as a MS Critical Update, I have pulled the plug on MSFT Updates, I have removed all updates and WGA, I will use other sources from now on. Diriving long suffering paying customers like me to these extremes is IMO the beginning of the end for MSFT. Jonah |

Just to get the Error from update history:
Go back to Windows Update, but then select View update history. (When you first get to website for Microsoft Update-Windows Update, look at left-hand column, under Options. Press "Review your update history".) If this is on V6 of Windows Update, you should be able to click on that error note (the red X), and see some info. -- Maurice N MS-MVP Windows (Shell / User), Aumha.net VSOP , DTS-L ----- "Canders" <> wrote in message news:4DD0ADC8-8117-4E57-B4D6-... >I am having the same problem with KB912812, so I followed your instructions. > I still get the same error.
