Just letting you know my experience with KB912919 update on XP SP2.
Auto update installed it then asked to restart system. Shutdown took
about 5 minutes. On Restart, some icons from sys tray were missing.

I then restarted the system again which cleared all problems - this
time shutdown time was normal and sys tray icons all appeared.

John A thought about it a bit, then said...

I wish I had your luck - after I installed the patch, only 4 out of 7 of
my system tray icons appeared. I restarted again, and only 2 appeared!

I've removed the patch, and have all my system tray icons back. Don't
know what's up - this is the first XP patch I've ever had problems with,
but the effects are easily reproducible (this is my third install try,
and every attempt has had the "vanishing sys tray icons" problem...)

Hi John A,

I've run into problems too. I use a CAD program called IntelliCAD and it
stopped displaying dimensions after installing the upate. So, I uninstalled
it and re-booted hoping that would allow me to get back to work.
Unfortunately, the dimensions are still not displaying in the CAD program -
just rectangles where they normally appear. Pretty sad when an uninstall
doesn't return the system to its prior state.
Anyways, I'll try re-booting a 2nd time like you did and hope that fixes it.

For those contemplating installing this update, be warned that it may cause
you grief.

FWIW, I'm using Win2k SP4.

Microsoft - please get a fix that doesn't cause us problems like these or at
the very least post work-around that allow us to get our work done.

An update... I found that new drawings I created displayed dimensions and
that it was just my old drawings that exhibited the problem. A select-all in
an old drawing, followed by pasting the whole lot into a new drawing resulted
in the dimensions being displayed properly. This is a relatively painless
fix for me, so the problem I complained about has become a non-issue.

It's also worth mentioning that I got a number of replies and suggestions
from helpful folks on another thread and that a Microsoft rep also contacted
me about this shortly after my posts to this newsgroup. I'm impressed -
great support - thanks!!!

Wow, I'm having the same problems with system tray icons including
Volume, Safely Remove Hardware, and others. I guess my problem is
related to the same fix installed last week.

My question is: Can I simply remove the update from the Add/Remove
Control Panel? I've done this before with some updates and it resulted
in a system that would not reboot. I'm kind of afraid to uninstall the
update.

Yes, MS needs a fix for this fix!
