I'm not sure the responses in the other threads fully resolve this problem. I
have two machines both running Windows XP Professional. The first machine has
Flash Player 8 and Shockwave Player installed. The second machine only has
Flash Player 8 installed.
When I run automatic updates on the first machine I am not offered (either
automatically or manually) Security Update KB913433. I have also checked my
update history and the update has never been installed.
However, when I run automatic updates on my second machine I'm repeatedly
offered the update and it keep failing to install (Error Code 0x643 -as per
another thread.
I can use the workaround and turn off all future notifications but I'm
intrigued as to why two machines with the same version of Flash Player get
two different responses

I am having the exact same problem.......sent in a letter to microsoft for
support, but have not received any response........when I went to the help
page and typed in the KB#, it said it did not exist. I have only one machine
but it is not allowing me to install this update either automatically or
manually. If you get the answer please post it here so I may know what to do.
Thanks

Dusty I have been offered the update yet my friend who is running XP also is
not being offered the update.....I resolved the problem by doing what they
said........the software is working properly.
Maybe it has to do with the shockwave player and flash player being
installed on the same puter.......I would rather not be getting the
notification.
The machine that I have does not have shockwave player, perhaps that has
something to do with it.
I you install shockwave on the other machine, you probably won't get the
notification any longer.

Hi grabby_1
Yes, I've already read that post which offers three options -turn off update
notification, delete flash player or install the latest version. I've
installed the latest version and I still keep getting offered the update. My
real query is why two machines with the same version of Flash Player get two
different responses from Automatic Updates. Seems to suggest some other
combination of installed files that has not yet been identified.

It all depends on their past history and which *previous* versions of Flash
Player they once had.

PCs with the same *present* version of Flash Player can exhibit different
symptoms to this update, depending on their past history.

Hi Dolomie

Thanks to Robin Walker who gave the definitive answer to this question and
also to grabby_1 who pointed me back to a link that I'd previously read and
not fully digested. My second machine has never had Flash Player 6 installed
on it whereas my first machine almost certainly has (and has been upgraded to
Flash Player 8). What I didn't fully understand (and am still not sure) with
regard to the workaround post from Carey Frisch was that it offers three
alternatives:
The first is to turn off the reminder within automatic updates (but that
generates a warning message that you have turned off important updates and
your computer may be at risk). -Not a very re-assuring state of affairs.
The third is to install the latest version of Flash Player (which I did and
still kept getting offered the update).
The second (the last in my sequence of solution attempts) is to delete
flash.ocx or swflash.ocx (which are, I believe the Active-X control files).
This worked for me. I deleted the files then re-visited Automatic Updates,
restored my hidden updates and re-ran an 'Express Scan' and lo and behold -no
updates offered.
Perhaps someone with far more knowledge than myself will tell me if, now I
have deleted the Active-X control, will it need to be re-installed when I
visit a web site that requires it or has the latest version of Flash Player
replaced it with something else?
