This automatic update downloaded ok, but failed to install giving 'Security
Update for Windows XP (KB913580)' error. No other error message. Tried 4x,
same message. No info in KB or MS search. Any suggestions?

Look in C:\WINDOWS\KB913580.log for the diagnostics.

What "damage"? What do you mean by "critical condition"?

I have had a similar problem.

When I reviewed my updates on MS site, it said I could click on the icon
(red & white x plus yellow ?) to see how to correct the problem. However
clicking made no difference.

I looked in the file \WINDOWS\KB913580 & think that the error code is 0xf201.

Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Thanks in anticipation.

If you get no response to clicking on the red cross, this indicates that you
have some third-party pop-up blocker (or toolbar) which is interfering with
the correct operation of Windows Update. Please disable all such
third-party applications or toolbars before use of Windows Update.

Please post the whole log file, as an error number out of context is
insufficient.

As you can see it is looking for the file c:\winnt\oem29.cat, but the file
truely resides at c:\winnt\system32\catroot\{.....}\oem29.cat

Any ideas for a solution to this?
