What I have discovered is that Quake 3 Demo interferes with downloading
updates at least as far as updates for Windows Defender is concerned.
It is not much of a problem because I think that Windows Defender is not
really that great but, it is free and probably does no harm.

Would you please check the WindowsUpdate.log to see if any error message
exists for this, apparent, conflict with Quake 3 Demo ?
Go to Start > Run > type in or copy&paste the below into the Open: line
and then click OK or press Enter

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

When the log opens scroll down to the bottom for the most recent entries.
Look for FATAL or WARNING entries with an error code
[ex: 0x80070002 ]
Please copy and paste the error code that is being thrown by Quake.

I could find no error message. So it probably was not the Quake Demo
that was the problem. I made that assumption because after I
un-installed the Demo the update proceeded and I had not had any
problems with updated prior to down loading the Demo.
