Hi there,
I have an XP Home system that displays the KB916595 setup screen at every
startup. The screen displays the available switches for the setup. I can't
get this KB to uninstall from Add/Remove programs, and if I redownload and
reinstall it specficially (not through WindowsUpdate, where it doesn't show
up) there is no change. How can I remove this this?

Thanks,

Thane

Thane,

Show hidden files, folders, and system files
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Navigate to WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB916595$ and open the folder.
Open the spuninst folder
Run spuninst.exe

If it fails again, copy and paste the contents of the spuninst.txt into
your reply, please.

If the $NtUninstallKB916595$ folder is non-existent, then the update
never installed properly.

When I ran spuninst.exe, it appears to work fine (tells me that the update
is uninstalled.) However, when I reboot, I get the same splash screen up at
startup, talking about the switches available for KB916595 setup. So for
some reason, it's trying to run the setup. I can't find the location it's
running from, however.

Thane,

Now that's not "expected behavior", is it ?
Let's try this first ... go to Start > Run type in

msconfig
Click OK
Click the Startup tab
Is KB916595 listed ? If yes, then UNcheck the box next to it and then
restart the system.
Did setup run for KB916595 now ?

If it did, the update process uses the <UserAccount>Temp folder, so,
since you have hidden files, folders, and system files showing, navigate
to Documents and Settings\<UserAccount>\Local Settings\Temp
(<UserAccount> is the name of your UserAccount)

Move *all* of the contents of the Temp folder to the Recycle Bin.
Next, navigate to the WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download folder.
Delete all contents of this folder.
Restart the system.
Did the setup run for KB916595 now ?
