After installing this month's updates and in particular the KB917422, I am
experience some issues with games installed on my computer, for example
F.E.A.R. Combat, which causes a kernel.dll error. I suspected this issue was
related to Kaspersky at first, but have been advised to uninstall KB917422.

I don't like the idea of uninstalling a critical update. Is there a new
patch I should manually install? I checked Windows Update, but there's
nothing yet.

Who advised you to uninstall 917422 (MS06-051)?

Do you want to run an unsecure machine just so you can play a game?

Uninstalling a security update to play online? Your decision.

> Is there a new patch I should manually install?

Nope, but MS is aware of problems, that KB917422 *may* cause on some
applications which rely on special DRM (Digital Right Management) or
copy protection (e.g. SecuROM) implementations. I wouldn't hold my
breath expecting a fix/revised update from Microsoft though. You may
want to ask yourself, why the heck those applications are programmed
"hacking" the Windows kernel, which is something like the heard of
Windows. If you ask me, it's up to the vendors of those applications
to update their software.

Please feel free to contact Microsoft Support directly in case you
want to receive a propper response: http://support.microsoft.com/security

After August updates, F.E.A.R. Combat crashes if Kaspersky Internet Security
is installed on system. Closing Kaspersky Internet Security does not help.
However the game runs fine if I uninstall Kaspersky Internet Security.

There are some issues with KB917422 and Kaspersky Internet Security 6 and
guys from forum.kaspersky.com advice all users having problems to uninstall
the KB917422.

I don't like the idea of uninstalling a critical patch. But I would not like
to uninstall Kaspersky Internet Security either. From a quick "googling" it
seems that users of other software (Comodo firewall) are having some issues
too.

Is there some new patch, I have to install manually to make things work
again. When I check Microsoft Update there are no new updates and I have
Automatic updates turned on.

Best regards,

Mitja

That's dangerous suspection - if you would ask me. See me previous
posting you've replied to.

Referring to Comodo, see
http://forums.comodo.com/index.php/t....html#msg10595
These are different issues effecting the *installation* of KB917422.

No. And don't expect one to be released by MS anytime soon
if ever.

</loop>

We are seeing a no-start problem with Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare by
UBIsoft and are cruising looking for solutions. This has been suggested the
culprit for us as well. We have Kaspersky installed as well. The only other
information we have gathered is the ms support page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924066/ which is still very new. They
suggest that they have a fix but it is not released to the public (yet?)
unless you ask for it.

** UPDATE **

We uninstalled the 917422 patch and got past the no start problem. We then
encountered a stop in the midst of the start screens. That was solved by
moving the program dvd from a DVD-RW and into a DVD-ROM player.

GRAW now starts and runs as advertised (at least for now until we hit
another bug)

After removing the patch from add/remove we are seeing that winupdate does
begin to offer it again so it is available to us for re-download at a later
time if we decide we want it back.

Try to start the game in Windows2000 kompatibility-Mode! (right klick
on desktopicon->properties...) it works on BF2...
