KB917422 didn't install

I just did today's batch of updates for XP. All save one installed
(and then I rebooted). The one that didn't install is KB917422. The
msgs are less than helpful. On the "Review your update history" page,
this update is marked with the "Failed" icon (and a question mark after
it--no idea what that means). There are two hyperlinks: one, for the
name, just pops up a window telling what the update is for. The other
one, the "Failed" icon itself, pops up another window giving the error
code (0x80070003), and suggests several "self-help options". I'll come
to those in a second.

When I try to re-do the update process, Windows Update tells me there
are no high priority updates.

Back to the "self-help options": one of the pages that comes up when I
try the "Find Solutions" link is
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336/en-us. I did what it says, but
Windows Update still tells me there are no high priority updates.

The bottom of the 910336 says that if at first you don't succeed, try
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602/. This basically directs you to
look at the KB917422.log file. This turns out to be an 18k file, so I
won't attach it here. And it's hard to tell where the error is, but
there are a number of lines like

1.578: KB917422 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is
not correct.

The 906602 page says to go to
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...pdte.mspx#EHAA.
That's a very long article, and about all I can find about the "The
update.ver file is not correct" msg is "The update.ver file is not
correct." Unhelpful, to say the least... It also tells how to remove
an update. Maybe that's what I need to do, but I'm not sure.

So in summary: since KB917422 apparently didn't install, how can I
force Windows Update to re-install it?

I had trouble updating also. Took me two tries but finally did it. I got a
runtime error after the first 7 of the updates installed. Anyway, try this
link and follow the directions.

You may want to try downloading and installing KB917422 manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Please make sure to have *disabled* any running program in the background
while installing, especially AntiVirus applications.

I had a problem with this and the cause was the firewall (comodo) that was
running, the update did not install and there were various runtime/visualc++
errors which made the system unusable, no internet
connection/antivirus/firewall would run neither would explorer, in the end i
used a backup image to restore to point before installing comodo firewall
and then windows update installed all updates without error, re installed
comodo and now all is back to normal.
It seems the cause in my case was the firewall and comodo forums have a few
responses from others with same problem.

I had a similar problem (posted earlier today), and your reply allowed me to
reinstall KB917422. But I have the same problem: the Microsoft Windows Update
website still shows the 'failed installation' error flag and no way to
reinstall from the site. Do you know how to correct the error flag?

Thanks--someone else posted a similar msg, but with a different link.
Turns out the link you're pointing to is for the update to Windows
Server 2003, the other link is for XP. Anyway, thanks for the pointer!

What I want to know is whether regular XP owners
(e.g. Home or Professional on X86)
are supposed to install this?

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=917422#appliesto

<quote>
Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
</quote>

The linked security bulletin does not make that distinction
so I don't know if mentioning these platforms was relevant
or whether the security bulletin is deficient for not mentioning them.
If only the latter perhaps that would explain the symptom
(although nobody complaining is giving enough details to even
guess one way or the other.)

Yes, absolutely.

MSKB articles *often* fail to be clear and/or precise, especially
but not exclusive true for "early birds".

> The linked security bulletin does not make that distinction

Which is the only relevant information - despite WU/AU/MU is/are
offering the update correctly to Windows XP machines of all kind.

Ehm, you mean WU offers the very same update again and again?
In these case please check the file versions on your machine
with those mentioned in the according Security Bulletin - and
have a look into the KB917422.log file to be found in the
\Windows folder.

In case you mean the error message in the Update History,
don't worry anyhow.

I am also running the Comodo Firewall and experienced the same runtime and
C++ errors leon mentioned when I attempted to install the KB917422 update.
However, all this did in my case was prevent KB917422 from properly
installing. I have tried all the MS solutions, from uninstalling it from
Control Panel, then manually installing the update. I've also removed the
Update history files (mentioned in the self-help options) but this only made
Windows Update show I had no updates installed. I restored those files so
I'd have an accurate history of the updates that have been applied.

I'm not willing to uninstall the Comodo firewall in order to get this one
security update to install -- it has taken the Comodo firewall too long to
learn all my programs that access the Internet (weeks) despite running
Comodo's application to Scan for Known Applications. I'd have to "reteach"
the firewall to allow traffic from everything that accesses the Internet.

From this point on, I'll be sure to disable and exit from the Comodo
firewall and the Comodo Launch Pad BEFORE running Windows Update. Disabling
and exiting from these programs before trying the reinstall method has still
not allowed KB917422 to install.

If anyone else running Comodo finds another solution to allow KB917422 to
install please reply to this thread.
