Every day or two Microsoft Update keeps notifying me of a new Securtity
Update KB917734, sometimes along with other updates. for Windows Media Player
10 in XP SP2 Home Edition.

I've been telling it to go ahead and download and install it, which it does
successfully even though, according to my Microsoft Update History, it has
already been installed multiple times.

Can anyone teel me why this happens? and if I should and is there a way to
correct this situation?

If you're going to post cross to more than one group than do it all in
one felled swoop. Now, where would you like the response posted ... here
or in windowsxp.security_admin ?

Hi jldeep. I am having the same problem with Security Update KB837009 on the
Millennium Edition operating system. It doesn't make any difference if I
scan and install the update from Microsoft Update or from Microsoft Automatic
Update. After the update is sucessfully installed, it keeps telling me that
I have to install this update. I tried installing the latest version of the
manual controls, iuctl.cab, but this did not help. How did you correct the
problem? Thanks, Paul.

That's OK, just wanted you to be aware of how to cross post
Download KB917734 from here -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Make sure that WMP is NOT or has NOT been open prior to downloading the
update. Save the update, do NOT run it. Close the browser and then
install it. Reboot the system afterwards.

Which other updates were reoffered besides KB917734 ?

Paul,

In order to ensure that the correct files are installed, go here -
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-013.mspx

Under General Information, click the plus sign next to
Security Update Information
Scroll down to and click the plus sign next to -
Outlook Express 6 SP1 for Windows XP, Windows XP SP1, Windows 2000 SP2,
Windows 2000 SP3, Windows 2000 SP4, Windows NT 4.0 SP6a, Windows 98,
Windows 98 SE, and Windows ME.

There will be a list of files that are installed by the update. Compare
the files on the system to the files of the update to ensure that they
match by locating them, right click them, choose Properties, and click
the Version tab.

Is the update listed in Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel ?
If so AND the files *match*, go to Start > Run > type in

regedit

Click OK
Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{2cc9d512-6db6-4f1c-8979-9a41fae88de0}

Click on {2cc9d512-6db6-4f1c-8979-9a41fae88de0}
Check in the right frame, under Name, for IsInstalled
It's Value should be 1
If it's not, then double click IsInstalled and set the Value to 1

Hi MowGreen. When I downloaded and tried to install KB837009 from the
Microsoft website, I received a message that in order to install this update,
Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 must be installed. My version of Outlook
Express 6 is 6.00.2800.1123. However, when I look for the list of files that
have been installed, seven (7) required files for SP1 are missing (Msimn.exe,
Oemig50.exe, Oemiglib.dll, wab.exe, wabfind.dll, wabimp.dll and wabmig.exe).
To correct this problem, should I uninstall Outlook Express 6 from the
Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and then install Outlook Express 6 SP1 from
Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (which is installed) by adding the component Outlook
Express 6 SP1? I tried to repair and reinstall Internet Explorer SP1,
however, neither of these two options helped. If I uninstall Outlook Express
6, I assume that I will loose all my settings and data. If so, how do I back
it up and reinstall the data after I install Outlook Express 6 SP1? Thanks.
Paul.

Paul,

I know as much about OE as I do about nuclear physics.
Suggest you either post to the OE newsgroup -
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...&lang=en&cr=US

or post to this forum - http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=7

It appears that OE 6 SP1 is NOT installed correctly.
