KB918899 crashing a new XP Home SP2 install

Hi,

I install WinXP Home SP2 on a clean drive, and run Windows Update. If
KB918899 is included I receive the "Explorer must close..." message box, with
the option to send/not send the info to MS. Whether or not I send it, the
box closes, the start button and taskbar disappear, and I'm left with just
the desktop background and an active mouse. I am unable to do ANYTHING at
this point. Safe Mode does not work either - I get just a black screen. I
have no choice but to start the O/S install all over again, making sure I do
not install KB918899.

I have yet to hear of anyone with a similar experience. The new version of
this update is specific to SP1, so I'm not sure it will solve my problem, and
I don't want to run the risk of having to start all over once again... any
thoughts?

Thanks!

Could you please do me a favour and click on the "technical
details" (or similar) link and provide the exact error message
to us? Or have a look into the Event Viewer (Start -> Run ->
eventvwr.msc -> [Enter]) At least the EXE crashing and the DLL
in which it seems to have crashed would be very, very fine.
Thanks!

You don't have Google Desktop installed by any chance, do you?

Bye,
Freudi

This happened last week, and I did not make note of any of that information.
Reproducing the issue would mean making a current backup as I'm fairly
certain I'll be forced to wipe my drives clean again and reinstall Windows...
again.

The problem occurred when I ran Windows Update immediately after installing
the O/S, before I had installed anything else.

Thanks,

Jim

Well, under these circumstances almost noone would be able to
help you solving the problem which is *not* a general one.

Bye,
Freudi
