KB923191 will not install

Went to WindowsUpdate and downloaded ALL updates on 10 Oct - all install ok
except KB923191.

Downloaded KB923191 as a standalone - program starts, inspects, creates
restore point then gives error message: KB923191 Setup error - Failed to
install catalog files.

Tried Safe Mode - same problem and error message.

Opened System Restore - a restore point had been created.

Opened Explorer - \$NtUninstallKB923191$ folder had been created with
subfolder \spuninst and file spuninst.inf in this folder.

No \KB923191 folder had been created under \$hf_mig$

No listing in Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.

WindowsUpdate still listed this as required.

Belarc Advisor listed update as missing/required.

Any ideas as to what's going on?

Thanks.
Jerry

Jerry,

What does the KB923191.log show in %windir% (the WINDOWS directory)?
See if there are any error messages present in that log.
You said - " Downloaded KB923191 as a standalone "
Was this from the MS Download Center or via WU ?
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-a55bc3165e3d
Download it from the above link, save it, and then close IE or whichever
browser is used.
Then try to install it.

The download was from the Microsoft web site. I even downloaded it a second
time to make sure there was no corruption.

There is no longer a .LOG file - I deleted it along with the folder that had
been created. (I had no idea it would include error messages.) (I thought
the .LOG files only had the uninstall info.)

Unless you deleted the above log file it's still present in the WINDOWS
folder. Download it from the MS Download Center link provided
previously. Save it, close the browser, install it.
If the update fails, open the KB923191.log and look for error messages.
Post back with the section of the log that contains said error messages.
Not the entire log, please.

The .LOG file had, to me, no separate listing of 'error messages'.
Therefore, the attempt that failed is ALL listed below. I hope it helps or
means something to you or anyone else.

More info.

I downloaded and installed OpenGL Extension Viewer 2.27.212 and KB92486.
After doing that I read your message and re-downlaoded KB923191 from the
same place I had downloaded it previously.

This time it installed. But, the procedure seemed to take far longer than
most previous updates - seemd like almost 5 minutes or more.

Other than installing the above two programs/updates nothing else, as far as
I know, was added/removed/changed.
