Installed it seven times in three days. Keeps on wanting to install itself.
It is not found in registry and not present in add/remove programs...Trouble
update...please provide resolution ASAP.

Navigate to the WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder
Delete ALL contents

Download the update from here and SAVE it to the Desktop:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Restart the system. Do NOT open ANY programs or browsers.
Click Start > Run > click the Browse button and point it to the
downloaded file on the Desktop,
StepByStepInteractiveTraining-KB923723-x86-ENU.exe

Click Open, then OK
Did that get it installed ?

I can answer that. No, it still does not install. It is sitting in my tray
too. I have tried everything that I know to get rid of it but it's still
there.

This solution does NOT work. It successfully installs over and over. It
there another way to resolve this? The download icon repeatedly appears and
I believe I've downloaded this security update about 12 times now. HELP!!!

Apparently there is an 'issue' with this update.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923723

Frankly, recommend hiding the update until this 'issue' has been worked
out. Or, since it's a Security update, contact PSS :

I can find no files that the update is supposed to have installed on my
system, XP Pro SP2. The only reference is this from the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Step By Step Interactive
Training

There is a FileList but even that is blank.

The KB923723.log shows some files being updated, but NOT the ones listed
in the Security Bulletin found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms07-005.mspx

Nice mystery, huh ?

I resolved the problem with "brute force". Since I have not been using the
Microsoft Step-by-Step training in years, I deleted those altogether. Then,
rebooted the machine and the update finally disappeared. However this
solution is not going to work for the users the want to retain the
Step-by-Step training. In those cases, the faulty update in question still
needs to be addressed.

Which is WHY I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that Users with an issue with this
update contact Microsoft's Product Support Services

The issues posted in this newsgroup are NOT reported to MS.
MS does NOT MONITOR this newsgroup.
For MS to have any idea that there IS AN ISSUE WITH THIS UPDATE, Users
need to contact PSS.

Repeat USERS NEED TO CONTACT PSS so that MS knows that this is not just
an isolated issue !
