hi,
my 2003 box automatically installed update KB924881 early this morning. i
am fairly annoyed that it took down IIS without writing any error events to
the logs. i have an event log notification system set to email me if any
errors are written to the logs, and a ping monitoring service also. all my
sites were stopped and i got no notifications.
the windows installer stopped the WWW service before installing the update,
which is understandable, but it did not start it afterwards. i did get a
W3SVC warning event immediately after the installation started: "A process
serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' exceeded time limits during shut
down. The process id was 'xyz'"
surely this should be an error and not a warning? for a server OS, i find
it hard to believe that IIS can be stopped due to an error without any
errors being written to the logs.
has anyone else encountered this? it looks like i will have to increase my
event log monitoring level to include warning events, but that will add a
lot of noise to my inbox for all the warning events that are not serious.
