Hi, my name is Bob La Pierre and I am with ACS Computers, a computer
retailer in Great Bend, KS.
On the morning of September 27th I had a 3 clients totaling 10 computers all
call saying their relatively new computers (6 months to 6 weeks old) had
suddenly started having the same problems.
All of these computers have started to randomly restart every 20 minutes to
every couple of hours.
Upon investigation I discovered that these computers all had one major change
in common. They all had automatically downloaded and installed the Microsoft
Update # KB925486 the evening of Sept 26th or early morning of Sept 27th.
Only one of the computers ever gave our customers a usable error message
that read "thread stuck in video driver"
I have tried:
1. Uninstalling the update
2. Updating the Motherboard Bios to v 0702 from Asus
3. Updating the video driver to 91.47 from NVidia
4. Putting the XP install CD in and booting from it for a "New INstall"
of XPpro
5. Since some of them seemed to crater on network access, forced manual IP's
I am at wit's end trying to figure out what to try next and looking for
input short of rebuilding the comptuers from scratch. Microsoft had to have
left something behind on the machine that I did the "new install" on but did
not format the drive (saving customers data) but I have no idea of what.
Computers affected all share these common specs
Motherboard; ASUS A8N-VM
Chipset; Nvidia NForce 410
Video Circuts; Integrated NVidia GF6100
CPU; Athlon 64+ 3200 and Athlon 64X2 4400
RAM; 1GB DDR Memory
Software;
XP-Pro sp2
Office 2000
Grisoft AVG Antivirus
Zonealarm Firewall
Network; They are all networked through DSL/Cable routers from Linksys and
D-Link originally running DHCP
