I have installed KB925486 update, and it has stuffed my computer. after the
install and I turn my comp off, when I reboot the next day my computer will
freeze as soon as it get into the main screen. I had to use system restore to
get my comp back online, and I lost some important data in the prosses. This
happened 3 times before I worked out that it was due to this update, i've
lost a lot of data and even some of my music files due to this.
Do yourself a favor people, for your own-sakes. Don't try to download the
KB925486 update, it's not worth the problems.
I hope microsoft fix this, or they'll have a lot of angery people to deal
with.

Windows version?

Did you institute one of the many workarounds for the VML vulnerability?

Two things:

1. All three of my computers had no problem with this update or any
updates for that matter. Now, how did you prepare your computer before
downloading and installing the update?

2. Back up is a computer user's best friend.

Why have most of the people problems when updates are installed?

i.e. this update: no problems at all on my system! (as with other automatic
updates: no problems at all!) ;-)

Fill me in on the work around, 10 minutes after having writen my comments I
had found that windows had updated my comp again without telling me ( till I
shutdown ). Same story, but this time it wouldn't even load my login screen.
Restore round 4.
Update is now turned off, till I know its safe again. Had to download some
programs again that i had just installed over net, as all settings were lost
in the restore. Whats wrong with my system!!!

Which antivirus program is installed ?

They aren't on disk or backed up somewhere?
This update replaces one file, vgx.dll.
Suggest there's something amiss with your system, possibly the AV is
interfering with the updates installation.
There's *nothing* buggy about this CRITICAL update.

I'm in charge of 25 systems, all Windows XP (Home, Media, Pro - mix), SP2.
And have not had any problem with this update.

However, I seldom download any third-party apps, Beta apps, ...

When I do download, I always download to my My Documents\My Download\[APP]
folder, so in case I need to restore, I have them.

If I realllllllly want a beta app, I've created a new partition of Windows
XP, install on there and play with my hearts content until I know all is
safe.

But, then again, I have many years as a system integrator, customer support
help desk rep, system designer for Windows.

I wish people would follow some sense of caution when dealing with software.
No software is perfect or even safe, as it operates differently on each
system.

Always be aware of third-party software ... it sounds really good ... but
you never know (e.g., PeoplePC, Gator, ...)

i then tried norton, and again it happend, then i had CA, lost all of that on
third update, now Trend Micro, all as suggested in ms update, same problem
with all, except the last one seamed to be worst of all, havig frozen before

Uninstalling all those anti virus programs is a problem all of its own.
If I were you, I would back up all important data to a external hard
drive, reformat the hard drive and clean install Windows and install
Avast or AVG as an AV and Zone Alarm or Kerio as a firewall, both free.
If you decide to do this, after you install Windows, do a clean
up/dskchk/defrag. Make sure that the XP firewall is enabled and go get
all the Windows Updates. Do a clean up/dskchk/defrag again. Install all
your programs and do a clean up/dskchk/defrag again. Install your
firewall and anti virus LAST and be sure to disable the Windows firewall
and go off line before installing them. Once installed, check for
updates for both. THEN install your printer, scanner and camera. Before
*anyone* says this is drastic, takes too much time, etc., just consider
how much time the OP has spent -- to no avail -- trying to fix this problem.

computer again, after all of this, will it know that this is the same
computer and allow me, or will it prompt me saying my key is already used,
and be forced to buy another key?
