Oh my gosh, I just found this forum and I am so glad [but sorry for everyone
dealing with this also] to know that I'm not alone.

I am running Windows XP Professional SP2.

After my computer automatically downloaded and installed KB925902 at
midnight of 4/3, it also automatically rebooted and crashed. Basically it
completes the BIOS tests sucessfully and hangs up before even getting to a
Windows screen. There is no option to boot into Safe Mode or the Last Known
Good Configuration.

Microsoft was absolutely no help. I tried everything from repairing the
installation to doing fixboot in Recovery Console. I even tried a parallel
installation without success. I finally had to reformat the drive and
reinstall from the CD. That was earlier today.

To add insult to injury, I reinstalled Windows, got all my virus protection
loaded, [had not done any windows updates yet], downloaded and installed IE7
and upon reboot the same thing happened again.

You should note that my drive is only 2 months old, I have been running my
system successfully for the past two months. I've also checked out all of my
hardware and done a comprehensive diagnostic check on the hard drive.

Microsoft is clueless so don't waste your time spending hours on the phone
with them.

If anyone out there knows what is happening, I'd love to get some insight
into the problem.

Thanks for listening to my rant :-)......time to reformat again.

Yes, thanks. That's a good idea....once I get my system up and running
again. It makes me think twice about letting MS install automatic updates.
I think I'll wait until they get all the bugs out first before installing
them.

There is a learning curve which is absolute torture for beginner users of MS.
I had similar issues with my rig and had to spend countless hours reading
sites such as aumha.org and the like. The support staff of service
providers were particularly useless, even though well intentioned. Actually,
even in failure you learn alot about your rig and software, so it is not an
entire waste of time as you think.

A full blown investigation of your issues can be had at an official MS
support site which was very helpful to me at aumha.org They will want to
know all the particulars about your machine after you have registered with
them. If you are tired of free help, keep trying or do a restore.

Assuming you installed 925902 and IE7 the first time around, and then only
IE7 the second time:

You may have a horked install of IE7. I suggest reading the following
link...

http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

....and then uninstalling and reinstalling IE7 per Sandi's tips, and using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx as the installation source,
not Automatic/Windows Update.

Hi PA Bear,

Sorry, I didn't understand the term "horked" but if it means that I pulled
in updates at the same time as installing IE7, then yes I think that's what
happened.

I've reformatted again, reinstalled XP Pro SP2, then IE7 (without checking
the box to install updates at the same time). After installing, I
sucessfully rebooted to Windows whereas on the prior installation, I
encountered the old problem of hanging up after the BIOS test. After that I
got all of my updates from Windows, (except KB925902) and again have been
able to reboot just fine. I think I'm out of the woods for the time being
and will continue with reinstallation of Office and my peripherals.

I was able to pull all of my files over to an external drive so I didn't
lose any data. Therefore, I'm also able to look at the text log of the
installation of that update (KB925902) and there are definitely some line
item errors within it. I just don't know enought to understand what it all
means. I was wondering if there was any other forum (besides Microsoft) that
would be interested in this data? I've sent it to MS already.

Thanks for everyone's comments.

Tracy i had the exact same problem, with my windows 2003 server, all you have to do is restore the Operative System with the instalation disk, do not use the recovery console, try to install windows but without formatting the disk, the instalation disk will copy again all the files of the windows you are using and the programs that you install before will remain
