KB927978 creates a log folder on the rootdrive ( where WINDOWS is
installed to ) OR, the partition/drive which has the most free space for
each attempt to install it.
The folder is randomly named with numbers and letters and contains the
msxml4-KB927978-enul.log.
Locate the *last* one created and post it in your reply, please.
One can determine the date by hovering the cursor over the folders.
You can safely delete all of the rest of them and keep the latest one
for diagnostic purposes.

Thane,

If you did a search of this newsgroup you would see that there is a
resolution for this repeated reoffering of KB927978. Since there is
ACTIVE EXPLOITATION of this vulnerability circulating on the net, it
would behoove you to get this update installed ASAP :

Is KB927978 listed by itself as MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978) ?
Is KB925762 listed in Add/Remove Programs under Windows XP - Software
Updates ?
If yes, then uninstall KB927978 first and then reboot.
Next, uninstall KB925672 and reboot.

Now install KB927978 ONLY and reboot once more.
Since KB929978 supercedes KB925672, it's not necessary to install the
latter.
IF either are not listed in ARP, open Folder Options in the Control
Panel. Click the View tab.
Under Files and Folders is 'Hidden files and folders'
Put a mark next to 'Show hidden files and folders'
Click Apply, OK.
Navigate to the WINDOWS directory (folder)
Open the $NtUninstallKB927978$ folder
Open the spuninst folder and run spuninst.exe
Restart and then do the same for the $NtUninstallKB925672$ folder.
Reboot.
Then download KB927978 from -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...B-6F18FE6921D4
Save it, do NOT run it
Close the browser and then install it
Reboot.

file on the hard drive in any location (viewing all files hidden or
otherwise) / I will be able to get you the log file shortly just thought you
might be interested that neither file is on this machine.....Thabks for

Error code 1603 means fatal error but there's no place in the log that I
can see it failing. Hmmm ...
Is that the *latest* log for the *last* failed installation of KB927978?

Suggest you delete the contents of
C:\WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download
Delete all of the folders randomly named with numbers and letters that
contain the msxml4-KB927978-enul.logs
Empty the Recycle Bin.

Download the update from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...B-6F18FE6921D4
SAVE it, do NOT run it.
Close the browser.
Now install it and reboot the system.
If it fails to install, post the msxml4-KB927978-enul.log

I don't want to sound dumb but how should I post the entire log file as it
is about 237Kb and too big for a single post
Thanks

Hello I have been able to get the update to install by editing the
registry..removed all registry
keys(hklm\software\classes\msxml2.domdocument.4.0. \cslid i.e. anything with
..4.0 in it) relating to old msxml intall and the new update installed fine
not sure completly why these were interferiing with the install other than
they were corupt everything is working fine now.
(kind of suspected this all along :0))
Thanks for all your help

Yes, that doesn't work either. The registry key won't allow any action even
by an administrator. The key is corrupt I think and can't be gotten rid of.
Or I don't know how to kill it.
