Unsuccessful install of this cumulative security update for IE6, with no
error message and no documentation on the MS site for KB928090. What's up?

AJ,

Just to be clear on this ... the update started to install, it failed,
there was NO error message.
How did you determine that the update failed to install ?
Was this via Automatic Updates or from a visit to one of the update sites ?

Check the KB928090.log located in the WINDOWS directory (folder) for
error messages/codes. Start at the bottom and work your way back towards
the top ... OR, just post the entire log if it's not that big into your
reply, please.

Thanks for your interest, MowGreen...

To be more exact, there was a message that the install had failed, but no
error code.

The KB928090 log file is quite lengthy, with messages of this ilk (heavily

I also had a failure to install KB928090, but in IE7, and got Error Code
0xD0000139. Can't get MS to tell me anything about that error code. Just
get advice to retry the installation, which has failed four times now. Also
can't redo the download, as Windows Update just tells me that it alredy is
downloaded; just install it.

Suggestions?

Just to let you know that I found a resolution, minutes before I was going
to start reinstalling XP.

Note that I also tried to install IE7 this morning, and that failed with the
c:\windows\ie7.log file pointing to several unwriteable registry keys in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\. Altho my
user account has administrator privileges, i was unable to change the
permissions on those keys and gave up on installing IE7, thinking that fixing
KB928090 would be more relevant (and probably easier).

I restored my system to a restore point a few days ago, thinking that that
would reset any odd things the failed IE7 install might have done. I also
renamed c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old and
removed the Windows Update ActiveX controls so that I could force a fresh
download of KB928090.

The download succeeded, but the install again failed.

I then booted into safe mode (F8 before the windows splash screen) and
logged in as Administrator. I went to the SoftwareDistribution\Download
folder and found the .\kfadsjfajs...xdfjkajdf\update folder corresponding to
KB928090 and ran update.exe.

I ignored the warning that I was installing an update in safe mode and then
received an error message that referred to the same registry keys I had seen
earlier w.r.t. IE7. Coincidence? Hard to say, but the IE7 installation
troubleshooting guide had pointed to similar keys, even if the exact error
message I saw in ie7.log was a little different.

Still in safe mode, I ran regedit and this time was able to change the
permissions of those keys (right-click on the key; select Permissions; use
Add... and Advanced keys to select Administrators as the Group; check Full
Control and Read; hit Apply and OK and close regedit).

Invoking update.exe for KB928090 then succeeded!

Rebooting back into normal Windows, I ran Windows Update and this time was
able to successfully install IE7!

I don't know if this approach would be recommended by M$, but it seems to
have worked for me. To anyone else with this problem, good luck!

Nice detective work, AJ. WTG !!!!
Permission issues were the cause of the install failures of IE7 and
KB928090. I just wish I knew just what is causing the Permissions to be
set in that manner that precludes the installation of Critical Security
Updates.

Download the update from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/i...splayLang%3den
Close all open browsers and programs.
Restart the system
Now install IE7-KB928090-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe
Restart the system

Did that get it installed ?
