the kb928365 and kb928466 failed to install solution (NOT!)

many of the threads here suggest uninstalling .net 1.1 and .net 2.0 then
reinstalling.

however while both .net 1.1 and .net 2.0 appear in my add/remove programs
list, when trying to uninstall either, I get this error:

"this action is valid only for products currently installed"

NOW WHAT?!?
