This is on a brand new Dell T3400, running XP pro x64 SP2.

All the critical updates that were offered installed correcty except
kb928366. The update history has the red circle with an 'x' and the
yellow question mark for this update. The error code that's given is
simply "0x" -- nothing more. Windows Update does not offer to
reinstall kb928366, nor can I find any entry in the history that it
installed succesfully. Yet this specific hotfix appears in the
add/remove programs in the control panel, and Belarc Advisor says all
hotfixes are instaled.

Googling I came aross a number of suggestions: I have done 1 & 2 below

1. Make sure we have the Windows 3.1 installer redistributable (v2) --
I attempted to resintall it - an got a message that the version on the
T3400 was newer.

2. Reinstall the Micrtosoft .Net 1.1 Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1. This
installs with a message reporting sucess ( with a note to run a command
after intallation) which I have done. I then returned to Windows Update
site - no critical updates are offered; and kb928366 still shows as
failed to install in the update history ( there was only the one entry
in the history of installed updates on the Windows Update site)

The other suggested fix said to uninstall ALL the .Net Frameworks, run
the installer cleanup tool, and then reinstall all the .Net. Frameworks
& hotfixes (this T3400 has .Net 1.1, 2.0 sp2, 3.0 sp2, and 3.5 sp1).
But before I go any futher I wanted to seek if there was any way I could
further verify whether this hotfix was actually correctly installed or
not. I haven't found any other option other than to remove all the
..Net components and resinstall them & the hotfixes.

I did have a similar issue with kb928366 - on a (XP Home Sp3) sysem and
it was successful.

Thanks for any help,

Bill

If KB928366 isn't offered by Windows Update, I wouldn't worry about it.

Don't worry about that either, it will never change.

If you have any doubts, see the Known Issues section of
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928366 for free support information.
