Me too! It failed to install.

My notebook PC has Microsoft.Net 3.0 installed on top of 2.0 and 1.1 (as an
upgrade).

Today I saw two security update for 2.0 and 1.1 service pack 1 show on
Windows Update critical list.

So I downloaded and install them. Both installation fail. Why? Can some
friend and expert here help please!

Do I need to install them, and how? What are the problems I experienced?

These are the two updates that failed to install

.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL and MSCOREE.DLL Security
Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP,Windows 2003 x64/IA64

.NET Framework 2.0 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL and MSCOREE.DLL Security Update for
Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP

I got the same unexplained "update failed" type error. Followed this advice
and got to a more detailed problem description, but it still fails because
I'm not clear on what to do.

"Subject: Re: Security update KB928366 7/10/2007 7:12 PM PST

By: Carey Frisch [MVP] In: microsoft.public.windowsupdate
Download the KB928366 security update file directly from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
and install it."
==========================
That got me to this point when I clicked on that link and ran it:

'Please wait while Windows configures .NET Framework 1.1.'

Then another dialog box pops up in front of it:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is
unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the
installation package 'netfx.msi' in the box below."

Use source:
C:\SWSETUP\AllDotNet\DotNet\US

Obviously I have to cancel because I have no idea where this is. Then I get:
"Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft .NET
Framework 1.1. The Windows installer cannot continue.

OK"

I thought that this was the reason that Microsoft created the Windows Update
service in the first place -- it's worked well, until now. The idea is
supposed to be that if you keep up with the updates, everything installs.
Now, we are seeing that the process requires all sorts of troubleshooting and
user intervention. Meanwhile, I will try to get this mysterious netfx.msi.
If it's not one thing, it's another!

do you have the Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1
dotnetfx.exe extract the files using a zip program to dotnetfx folder
and then run the update again. when it asks for netfx.msi direct it to
the dotnetfx folder the update will then continue to install.

I am puzzled over this problem also. I have successfully downloaded
version 1.1 a dozen times yet it still shows up to redownload again.
Does one really need to download service pack 1 when we are using
service pack 2? Version 1.1 is for service pack 1 whereas version 2 is
for service pack 2. Both came out on the same day shown on my update
history. It shows zero minutes to download, no specified cpu, unknown
memory and hard disk space. Maybe microsoft screwed up on this one or
something else is taking place and we are not seeing it.

Thanks for the tip, limeey. I'm annoyed with Microsoft. I really have no
idea what you're talking about. I am one of the people who listened to
Microsoft when they said that if you just install Windows update and keep
your computer updated, they will take care of the rest. I don't know what
bloody framework I have, actually...no interest in knowing, either, as I paid
for their OS license and they promised me that they would keep it running
smoothly. Their unhelpful non-error message and the recurring shield that
reminds me that I have to install an update that I've tried installing
numerous times? That's their responsibility. My comment was that this was
the whole IDEA behind Windows update. It's supposed to be auto-magic, and
apparently it's not. If millions of people have to start unzipping programs
to some specific folder to guide a program that is supposed to be
self-directed to install an update that didn't install so they had to locate
a link themselves from some obscure message board, it's not going to work, is
it? I'll do it, but I want Microsoft to know that I will avoid their
crapware in the future. Now, I'm off to search for dotnetfx.exe.

I also got this problem for updates from Microsoft got a workaround on
the internet.

Download from
KB928366
http://rapidshare.com/files/42491444...d81a178b15.exe
also i found two more files which are not downloading.
KB928365
http://rapidshare.com/files/42491488...879819fb45.exe
kb890830
http://rapidshare.com/files/42491438...028c951f9d.exe

hashes are included in the file name to check for authenticity of the
updates..
