After installing KB929338 my HP Pavillion dv1000 (Win XP Home) will
not boot. I receive the error "ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt or missing."
Restoring to "last known good configuration" does not fix the
problem. Copying a pre-KB929338 version of ntoskrnl.exe into
system32\ also does not fix the problem. Furthermore, scandisk does
not fix the problem. However, reinstalling Windows via the factory-
installed repair partition does fix the problem. _Every_ time I
download and install KB929338 I get the error, and I must reinstall
Windows XP.

Aside from blocking KB929338, are there any solutions?

HP service has been friendly but unhelpful.

-Virus scans with updated definitions files from AVG free edition,
Symantec Corporate 10, and ClamAV are unremarkable.
-My entire 1gb RAM passes a memtest86 scan.
-My hdd passes a "thorough" 60-min hard disk scan from HP BIOS

Try downloading the update manually via DownloadCenter:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...b-dc23923d09e7

*Save* the file to a folder your harddisk (let me call it "C:\Downloads"),
do *not* execute it from within your browser.

Afterwards type the following under "Run" in the Start menu:
"C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB929338-x86-ENU.exe" /o

The parameter "/o" (o like overwriteOEM) should do the trick for you.
