Apparently kb930916 is so important microsoft decided to install it for me
even though I have it set to download but prompt to install.

I came back to my idle computer and saw the update icon in the tray but
assumed it was just downloading. Computer was running very slow, wouldn't
close open apps, so I hit ctrl-alt-del to get to the task manager. No task
manager appears, all I get is a blank desktop and an unresponsive system.
ctrl-alt-del again, wait, does nothing. Decide to try one more time before
holding down the power button, this time I get a blue screen that flashes too
fast to read and the computer shuts down.

Now I get "error loading operating system" on boot. Tried repairing from XP
cd, no repair install option. Recovery tool couldn't find windows at all.
chkdsk is finding one unrecoverable error.

Did the WU fubar my system or is it a hardware failure that coincidentally
happened with a WU install?

I had exactly the same problem last night and ended up staying up till all
hours troubleshooting the computer. I didn't even realize till about the 4th
reboot that MSFT was sending updates. I ran internal diagnostics on my
laptop till the battery quit, and went so far as to take the battery out for
a while.

The symptoms were pretty much as you described, except I never even saw the
blue screen.

Finally, at about 0100, I got going again, AFTER the install was completed.
Try safe mode.

I can't get in to safe mode. I can't get any semblance of windows to appear.
From the recovery console it looks like the windows directory doesn't even
exist.

I have had the same problem since this KB930916 was installed, IE7 slowed, no
right click menu, no task manager, then.......computer kept
rebootin...stating that windows failed to load...goto safe mode or recently
working blah blah blah..what was this KB930916 update for and do microsoft
test the updates before sending them?

Regards Darrin, I deleted the update until further notice.
