KB931768 / trust in MS

I've been using MS products since the old DOS days.

I've learned over the years that trust is an element of life that can take
many years to build, but it can be shattered in an instant.

Microsoft has lost the trust of many of their patrons with the release of
KB931768. It's going to be very hard for me to ever enable AU again!

I never thought I would say it, but perhaps it is time to consider using
other operating systems!

It's time for MS to wake up and concentrate on taking good care of their
customers!

Mistakes can happen. It was a mistake for them to assume that everyone
had their temporary internet files in the default location, but that
isn't what has me angry.

The fact that several MVPs were dispensing inaccurate information upsets
me more. I thought they were supposed to be knowledgeable, not truly
clueless.

One of them actually asked why so many people had moved their temporary
internet files to different locations. Could he possibly have _not_
known that removing dynamic data from the OS drive reduces the need to
defragment it?

Right! I have been directing my Temporary Internet Files to D:\Temporary
Internet Files since Windows95 days. In all those years I have never had
problems. Anything that causes a great deal of fragmentation I keep off of
the system partition. I also have My Documents stored on D:\, along with all
the subfolders. This I also share with Vista. No problems what-so-ever for
12 years now.

I dual boot and applied KB931768 to both Vista and WinXP. I ran into
problems with both systems. In Vista it seems to be a program
incompatibility that I am slowly working my way through. I went back to a
clean "base" image with no extras installed. I applied the updates and have
not had the problems that I initially saw. I am now slowly installing my
desired programs - testing after each program install - in an attempt to
find out what 3rd party program was causing the interaction. I can, at this
time, say that the install of Office 2007 Ultimate or Visio 2007
Professional is not causing the undesirable interaction.

I have not yet begun to work on my XP installation.

In both installations I also use a common D:\Temporary Internet Files. It
causes no problem in Vista. We'll see when I get back into Windows XP.

I should have mentioned that the MVPs get their information from MS.
The ivory tower is sometimes out of touch with reality, so maybe that is
where the blame should be. ;-)

This does seem to have been a really bad mistake but surely it must also
cause Microsoft a good deal of trouble and inconvneience to deal with it.
Whoever was responsible for testing KB931768 prior to release must be in hot
water!

If, as I have been told, the problem is really a permissions problem
that occurs when you move TIF to a non-default location, the problem is
with how those permissions are set and maybe not with the update.

I haven't compared the folder properties, yet.

When I learned that many people were having severe problems since
installing KB931768, I checked to see if I had that update, because
I have had no problems with my computer. Yes, I do have it. So I
subscribed to this newsgroup, specifically to see what problems many
people are having.

I use my computer mostly for gaming, and I subscribe to many
newsgroups specific to the games I have installed, as well as to
24hoursupport.helpdesk (subscribed here since 1998). The latter
newsgroup has been invaluable in helping me fix glitches in both
hard-and soft- ware.

Many of the games newsgroups suggest that this or that file be moved
to a different partition or hard drive, so that the game will run
smoother, or so that the computer runs faster, or so that I do not
have to defrag as often, etc. This is not always an intelligent or
best move. I learned the hard way to leave Windows-specific files
on the same partition, normally the C drive, that the Windows
Operating System is installed on.

Yeah, so I have to defrag once in a while. I have to run Disk
Cleanup once in a while. I have to compact/compress once in a
while. It is a lot easier than having to format and reinstall
everything because my moving something caused a breakdown. I also
empty my temp Internet files every time I exit the Internet.

My guess is, that Microsoft was not anticipating problems with this
update, because they did not anticipate a bunch of whining idiots
would pull the system apart and run it in a way that it was not
built to run.

Happy Mothers' Day to all of the mommys here.

If Microsoft did not want us to move the TIF folder location then they would
not give us an Internet Explorer facility to do just that!!!
