This has been downloaded and "installed" over 30 times on my automatic
updates. It is listed in my programs as installed on April 11. No new
updates since then but this one keeps coming up over and over.
Will any of these options work for me?
1. remove the April 11 program and then let it reinstall itself as it seems
to want to do
2. Do a system restore to April 10 and then check for updates
3. turn off automatic updates
4. none of the above

Do Step 1, then create a folder on the C:\ drive and name it Downloads
if one does not already exist.
Download KB931784 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
SAVE it to C:\Downloads, do NOT run it !
Close the browser and ANY other open programs.
Go to Start > Run > type in :

"C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe" /o

[ Note the blank between the last quote sign and the parameter /o ]

Click OK or press Enter.
The /o switch should help overwrite OEM files.
Restart the system.

The above steps were originally posted by Ottmar Freudenberger [Freudi]

This didn't work for me. The new folder named Downloads was put in MY
DOCUMENTS...is that wrong? I am going to try it again.

Re-read - "create a folder on the C:\ drive and name it Downloads"

The command wouldn't work because you placed the downloads file under "my
documents".

Place the folder you named "downloads" in the root directory and try the
command again.

If you're insiting on placing the Downloads folder and the EXE file
into that folder (instead of following the instructions), the command
would read:
"%userprofile%\My Documents\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe" /o

I decided to try using "system restore" to a date earlier than the first
download of KB931784. That appears to have taken care of the problem. I
waited a few days before replying to be sure that the problem didn't start
all over again....so far so good. My computer, since then, has downloaded
that particular update and others without repeating updates. Keeping my
fingers crossed. Thanks to all of you for your input.
