KB931784 Install Error

I manually downloaded the update, saved it to C:\Downloads, and ran the cmd
line "C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe" /o
However, the install wizard gives me an error "Setup cannot copy the file
ntoskrnl.exe" It is trying to copy files from C:\windows\driver cache\i386.
The ntoskrnl in the i386 dir is dated 3/1/05. At this point, I cancel the
install by answering NO to "Do you want to Continue Setup without copying
this file?"

The update is NOT copying the file, it can not determine the file's version.
Please post the section of the WindowsUpdate.log that contains that
includes " KB931784 " into your reply. The WindowsUpdate.log is located
in the WINDOWS directory [folder] and can be viewed in Notepad.

We need to see where in the log KB931784 fails to install.

Retry the same procedere in Safe Mode of Windows XP.

I received the same error trying to run intall in safe mode.

I rebooted and tried to run the auto windows install which was unsuccessful.

That line states that the installation of KB931784 did *not* happen
with parameter /o ("o" like "OEM overwrite").

Please retry once more and make sure to set the quote signs "" around
the path of the WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe and add the blank
followed by /o *afterwards*. Copy and paste the following into "Run"
in the Start menu:

"C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe" /o
