I noticed after kb931784 windows XP says ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt. Anyone
else see this? Does anyone know how to resolve this? After bringing a
backup of the file back, it is fine, but wants to do the update again.

Thanks

No corruption or error codes but I am sick of the constant re-install
requests, to the point that I have turned auto update off and when updating
manually I un-select this update.

First time I had this issue with a friends machine. I just downloaded the
updated installed it twice, and everything is fine. First problem I have
seen with an update in about 2 years.

Is the update installed, that's the important part. Since it replaces a
previously issued one, check in Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel
to see if KB920958 is installed.
If it is, suggest you uninstall it and then reboot the system.
Then download KB931784 from here and save it, do NOT run it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
When the download is finished close the browser.
Now run WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe
Restart the system if prompted to ... in fact, even if not prompted to.
Did that get it installed ?
If not, please open the KB931784.log located in the WINDOWS directory
[folder] and post it's contents into your reply.

Where was the 'backup of the file' located that you 'brought back'?
If it's the version that the update replaces then the system will be
prompted to reinstall the update.
Did the operating system state that the file was corrupt or was it an
antivirus program that brought up the message, AND, was an antivirus
program actively monitoring the system {NORTON] during the update's
installation ?

It was the OS that said it was corrupt. It was a backup before the update.
I downloaded the update manually and had to install it twice to get it to
stick
