I did Windows Update yesterday (9/6/07). The above install continuously
fails. How do I just get rid of it?

I am experiencing similar behavior on a machine I recently reloaded with
Windows XP SP2. I see the exact Error code that you state in the subject, in
my ReportingEvents.log. This is the behavior I am seeing:

1. Notification that there are updates to install.
2. Upon installation, the (windows updater) installer initializes
successfully.
3. Upon the onset of installation, the install fails.
4. I then receive an "Automatic Updates" dialog informing me that the
following updates could not be installed. KB931836
5. Eventual (rather quickly) I see the notification (in the sys tray) that
an update is ready to be installed.

What I have done:

1. I have stopped the Automatic Updates service, remove all files from the
Windows\SoftwareDistribution directory & restarted the service. I have then
performed a windows/microsoft update. The problem has resurfaced.
2. I have stopped the Automatic Updates service, and installed the
(KB931836) update manually, but it tells me that a newer update already has
been installed.

I am at a loss for what to do at this point. It is a very annoying problem.

Can someone from MS help us out?

Thank you.
