This is getting a bit silly - having been told by Updates that I need
KB951847, a couple of days ago, and not being able to find it in the
security update pages at MS, I now have another that has just popped up -
KB931906 for Capicom[whatever that is]. I Will Google :-(

It was issued in May 2007 - has it taken MS that long to figure I need this?
Goodness knows how many times I have downloaded updates, asked MS what I
need and installed SP3 like a good little boy.
I expect this sort of harassment from MS once a month on Black Tuesdays, and
not in between as well.

Oh well, another entry for the Hidden Folder, along with driver updates etc
etc.

Do you need assistance or did you just want to rant?

Most likely you didn't need it until now. Either one of the recent updates
installed CAPICOM or some third-party software did. If CAPICOM isn't installed,
it doesn't need to be updated. (No, I don't really know what it does offhand
either - something to do with encryption I think!)

Harry.

Hello Harry
Thank you for your observations.
I found it in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Application Extension.
Properties show it was modified 15 June 2006, but it seems to date back to
2001.
Yes, it is to do with encryption - its Microsoft's
see here
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms995332.aspx
&
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...32(VS.85).aspx
&
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPICOM
Here it says it is discontinued and Microsoft suggests replacing CAPICOM
with .NET Framework's X509 Cryptographic Classes and a number of other
alternatives.
I would like to know how/who/why this discontinued application arrived, in
view of the fact that I have not downloaded/added any software to the
computer for the last three months. So I will read on, when I have time.

You stuck in a Windows mobile device to a computer and it enabled
capicom. WU then patched it.

Capicom is on systems but not in a 'used' date. You did something to
the system that kicked it into "used and now we need to patch it" state.

Because your system *now* makes use of CAPICOM (after having installed
a new software/ActiveX control and/or updates for that one) or at least
it's Certificates.

Hello Susan
I am afraid that I have never attached any form of mobile device into my
computer. The only hardware attached are monitor, printer, sound system,
mouse and keyboard. All have been attached since the computer was built in
2006.

Hello Freudi
Where can I find the active X controls listed? - if such a list exists.
I will check that to see if there is a date and then try and match it with
System Restore, where I always note any changes on my computer.
