I went to the link you provided and registered my system files but no joy. I
tried to run the Internet Explorer Repair Tool, but there was no check box
provided to Repair Internet Explorer. When I clicked "Change/Remove" it
simply asked if I wanted to uninstall it. I'm hesitant to install
anything--the update resolution suggests that I try installing Microsoft SML
Parser, but the computer that the update is on is our email server for the
office, and I don't even know what XML Parser is.

I contacted customer support by email, and a representative had me follow
some troubleshooting steps to check the following 3 things:

1. Windows Update components are missing or corrupted.

2. The temporary folder of Windows Update contains corrupted files.

3. The local Windows Update services have not been configured correctly.

I followed the steps with no luck and replied to him with some attachments
of my results, but my emails kept getting bounced back as Delivery Status
Failed. I would simply hide the update as I have on other updates that don't
install properly, but this one seems to be messing with our Norton AntiVirus
program by shutting it down and freezing windows.

NOT installing Security updates is not Good Practice.
If you have issues installing Security updates then support is *free*
From the KB935839 Security Bulletin -

Call that number and cite Case ID SRX1037665949.

I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that the cause of ALL of the
updating issues can be traced to the presence of Norton Antivirus.

As to the repairing of IE, it's been quite awhile since I've run that on
a Win2K box. Is IE *6* listed as installed in Add/Remove Programs ?
If so, you can attempt a repair using this:

IE6 was not listed on the add/remove programs.

We seem to have problems installing almost all of the security updates; so
far they don't cause any major problems, so it is not really worth the time
it takes to try to resolve it, especially since it never really gets
resolved.

I called the customer service number, and they said they would have to call
me back. It seems like every time they give me a case ID, though, when they
transfer me to someone else, I still have to start all over again (and
sometimes they will issue a new case ID, even if it is during the same phone
call). I have given the logs on the (now 4) updates that will not install to
a bunch of different people. It just seems like a waste of time for an
update, even if MS deems it 'critical.'
