I have read all of the comments of persons experiencing this problem of KB936181 showing up on the bottom task bar to be an Update Install. Like everyone else, I go through the procedure ONLY to have it repeat over and over again. As I sit here writing this, the small shield yellow icon is sitting there requesting to be accomplished again.
Has ANYONE come up with a solution for this problem and why is Microsoft addressing the problem as well?
Can ANYONE help?

Hi
Yes I had all the same problems on my windows XP. Finally I resolved it by
doing the following: 1. Switch off automatic updates. 2. Delete KB936181 from
add/remove programs. 3 Go to www.microsoft.com and manually download
KB936181. 4. Switch on automatic updates. This resolved the problem for me.
Hope it works for you. Good luck.

Read the ' Known issues with this security update ' here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936181

The problem can stem from 3rd party printer software that 'locks' the
MSXML dll, it can not be replaced, and the update is never successfully
installed. Thus, it's reoffered ad finitum.

Just curious, is an HP Printer/All-in-One installed ?

I have found two interesting pieces of information on this subject. One is
the ' Known issues with this security update ' here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936181.

The other is:

QUOTE

I had been using the wisdom of many in here and been grateful for everyone's
help .. but even what I was doing was not solving this for me. I eventually
ran across this option and after doing it, the problem disappeared. I'd like
to give credit to the person who submitted this wherever I got it, but I
can't remember the site.

He noted that the dll file needed to be registered and to do that just get
to a command prompt and enter this:

C:\windows\system32\regsvr32.exe msxml4.dll

and hit enter. Note the space between exe and msx.

It will tell you if you have registered it successfully, and if so your
msxml4 problem will go away.

Thank you all. I hope this post help others as so many have helped me in
these newsgroups.

Hope this helps.
