**Was XP SP3 applied prior to the installation of IE7 or afterwards ?**

There is no charge for support that is associated with security updates. For more information about how to contact Microsoft for support issues, visit the International Support Web site. http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=21155 " Please try another attempt at updating by clicking the Windows Update link on the Start Menu or, open IE, click Tools, Windows Update. When the updates fail to install, close IE. Open the WindowsUpdate.log, located in the WINDOWS directory [folder] Click Start > Run > type in windowsupdate.log Click OK or press Enter. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the log for the most recent entries. Work your way back up towards the top until you find entries that contain FATAL or WARNING errors - How to read the Windowsupdate.log file http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093 Please include the entries just prior to and after the entries that show FATAL or WARNING error codes. Or, just copy&paste at least the last 50 - 75 lines of the WU.log into your reply. It's Win XP Pro SP3, anti-virus is Eset NOD32 and the firewall is Comodo,
both are bang up-to-date. I also run Spywareblaster and Ad-Aware. I think Norton may have been installed when this laptop was new (5yrs ago) as I dimmly recollect running a special Norton removal tool. I haven't recently reinstalled Windows or manually installed a Service Pack "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) when posting to > this newsgroup. > > 0x8007F0F1 = STATUS_INCOMPARABLE_BRANCHES > > Did you just reinstall Windows or manually install a Service Pack? > > What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your > subscription current? 1. Download/run this Removal Tool, then reboot:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039 2. If the problem persists... Start a free Windows Update support incident request: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527 For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB938127). LOOK!!! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE, call the above number and ask to be transferred to the "Consumer IE queue" (which is 47830). [Given the sudden rash of posts all-too-similar to yours, I suspect you're seeing the affects of a hijackware infection...especially if MS08-078 (KB960714) hasn't been installed yet either.] -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.net k64 wrote: > It's Win XP Pro SP3, anti-virus is Eset NOD32 and the firewall is Comodo, > both are bang up-to-date. The beginning of the KB938127-v2-IE7.log should be showing if the
version of IE installed is being correctly read by the update servers. Please reopen that log. Here's where the Version of IE shows. See if it shows in the log from your system: 2.234: 2007/08/14 10:08:31.029 (local) 2.234: D:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\c87932aed ce288373d0b6a6c23f00c8a\update\update.exe (version 6.2.29.0) 2.264: Hotfix started with following command line: /si /ParentInfo:9b0bbf7cf85c294c8d58601846c5d4af 2.264: FileVersion of D:\Program Files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe is Less Than 7.0.0.0 <---- here If it *doesn't show IE7 is correctly being detected*, then post the above section of the log. If it *does show that IE7 is being detected correctly*, don't bother posting the log instead, suggest you disable Commodo and enable the native XP firewall. The log appears to show IE7 is correctly being detected (no messages stating
otherwise). As advised, I switched from Comodo to Windows firewall then did the net stop / deletes / net start as described. Did Windows Update / Custom and KB938127 was offered along with the two other failing updates. I checked just KB938127 for installation and noted that the message "downloaded and ready to install" still appeared. The installation window appeared and failed much faster than previous times This time the error code is 0x80246007 The last 50 or so lines of the log are here... 2009-02-07 03:31:43:214 1620 12d4 Report REPORT EVENT: {AC00620D-0799-46DE-B42E-1D855817011C} 2009-02-07 03:31:31:176-0000 1 147 101 {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} 0 0 MicrosoftUpdate Success Software Synchronization Windows Update Client successfully detected 8 updates. 2009-02-07 03:34:24:816 576 c64 COMAPI ------------- 2009-02-07 03:34:24:816 576 c64 COMAPI -- START -- COMAPI: Install [ClientId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2009-02-07 03:34:24:816 576 c64 COMAPI --------- 2009-02-07 03:34:24:816 576 c64 COMAPI - Allow source prompts: Yes; Forced: No; Force quiet: No 2009-02-07 03:34:24:816 576 c64 COMAPI - Updates in request: 1 2009-02-07 03:34:24:816 576 c64 COMAPI - ServiceID = {7971F918-A847-4430-9279-4A52D1EFE18D} 2009-02-07 03:34:24:816 576 c64 COMAPI - Updates to install = 1 2009-02-07 03:34:24:816 576 c64 COMAPI <<-- SUBMITTED -- COMAPI: Install [ClientId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2009-02-07 03:34:24:826 1620 1098 Agent ************* 2009-02-07 03:34:24:826 1620 1098 Agent ** START ** Agent: Installing updates [CallerId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2009-02-07 03:34:24:826 1620 1098 Agent ********* 2009-02-07 03:34:24:826 1620 1098 Agent * Updates to install = 1 2009-02-07 03:34:24:866 1620 1098 Agent * Title = Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB938127) 2009-02-07 03:34:24:866 1620 1098 Agent * UpdateId = {A2A1D3B3-C228-45AD-9175-566E7DD41DD1}.101 2009-02-07 03:34:24:866 1620 1098 Agent * Bundles 1 updates: 2009-02-07 03:34:24:866 1620 1098 Agent * {5DB41B67-E1CE-460B-A5E9-32EF222D3EEA}.101 2009-02-07 03:34:32:427 1620 1098 Handler Attempting to create remote handler process as K64-LAPTOP\Keith in session 0 2009-02-07 03:34:33:068 1620 1098 DnldMgr Preparing update for install, updateId = {5DB41B67-E1CE-460B-A5E9-32EF222D3EEA}.101. 2009-02-07 03:34:33:088 1620 1098 DnldMgr WARNING: Update invalid. Downloaded and ran the tool then rebooted and did Windows Update / Custom and
installed just KB938127. This time it did download the update again but it still failed with the error 0x8007F0F1 Perhaps I should now start a support incident request. "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > 1.
