**Was XP SP3 applied prior to the installation of IE7 or afterwards ?**

The beginning of the KB938127-v2-IE7.log should be showing if the
version of IE installed is being correctly read by the update servers.
This update was released last year: Release Date: August 26, 2008.

FYI, MS offers *no-charge* support for Security update installation and
compatiblity issues :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms07-050.mspx

" Support
• Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from
Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge
for support calls that are associated with security updates.
• International customers can receive support from their local Microsoft
subsidiaries. There is no charge for support that is associated with
security updates. For more information about how to contact Microsoft
for support issues, visit the International Support Web site.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=21155 "

Please try another attempt at updating by clicking the Windows Update
link on the Start Menu or, open IE, click Tools, Windows Update. When
the updates fail to install, close IE.
Open the WindowsUpdate.log, located in the WINDOWS directory [folder]
Click Start > Run > type in windowsupdate.log
Click OK or press Enter.

Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the log for the most recent
entries. Work your way back up towards the top until you find entries
that contain FATAL or WARNING errors -

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Please include the entries just prior to and after the entries that show
FATAL or WARNING error codes. Or, just copy&paste at least the last 50 -
75 lines of the WU.log into your reply.

What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

It's Win XP Pro SP3, anti-virus is Eset NOD32 and the firewall is Comodo,
both are bang up-to-date. I also run Spywareblaster and Ad-Aware.

I think Norton may have been installed when this laptop was new (5yrs ago)
as I dimmly recollect running a special Norton removal tool.

I haven't recently reinstalled Windows or manually installed a Service Pack

the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB938127).

LOOK!!! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE,
call the above number and ask to be transferred to the "Consumer IE queue"
(which is 47830).

[Given the sudden rash of posts all-too-similar to yours, I suspect you're
seeing the affects of a hijackware infection...especially if MS08-078
(KB960714) hasn't been installed yet either.]

The beginning of the KB938127-v2-IE7.log should be showing if the
version of IE installed is being correctly read by the update servers.

Please reopen that log.
Here's where the Version of IE shows. See if it shows in the log from
your system:

2.234: 2007/08/14 10:08:31.029 (local)
2.234:
D:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\c87932aed ce288373d0b6a6c23f00c8a\update\update.exe
(version 6.2.29.0)
2.264: Hotfix started with following command line: /si
/ParentInfo:9b0bbf7cf85c294c8d58601846c5d4af
2.264: FileVersion of D:\Program Files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe is
Less Than 7.0.0.0 <---- here

If it *doesn't show IE7 is correctly being detected*, then post the
above section of the log.

If it *does show that IE7 is being detected correctly*, don't bother
posting the log instead, suggest you disable Commodo and enable the
native XP firewall.
Go to Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter.
Navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
and delete *all* contents of the Download subfolder.

Back to Start > Run > type in

net start wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter

KB938127 *should* then be downloaded once more via Automatic Updates.
If not click the Windows Update link on the Start menu. IE will open and
go to Windows Update.
After the initial scan, click the Custom option.
See if WU offers KB938127.
If yes, install it from WU.
Restart the system.

The log appears to show IE7 is correctly being detected (no messages stating
otherwise).

As advised, I switched from Comodo to Windows firewall then did the net stop
/ deletes / net start as described.

Did Windows Update / Custom and KB938127 was offered along with the two
other failing updates.
I checked just KB938127 for installation and noted that the message
"downloaded and ready to install" still appeared.
The installation window appeared and failed much faster than previous times

This time the error code is 0x80246007

The last 50 or so lines of the log are here...

Downloaded and ran the tool then rebooted and did Windows Update / Custom and
installed just KB938127.

This time it did download the update again but it still failed with the
error 0x8007F0F1

Perhaps I should now start a support incident request.
